The rifle is a precision long gun with a grooved barrel that stabilises its projectile and extends effective range beyond ordinary early smoothbore firearms.

This level of precision manufacture is exceptional. Rifles using self-contained metal cartridges are associated with advanced gnome gunsmiths, rare copied mechanisms and highly specialised workshops rather than ordinary city arsenals.

Rifle in the Campaign

A rifle lets a specialist threaten targets at distances that make many early firearms impractical. Its single-shot capacity means it still rewards careful fire rather than volume, and its advanced cartridge supply can be difficult to replace outside the workshops that produced it.

Rifle Rules by Edition

Rifle — D&D 5.5e / 2024

Category Damage Range Weight Properties Mastery
Hunting Rifle 2d10 Piercing 80/240 ft. 8 lb. Ammunition (Firearms), Reload (5 shots), Two-Handed Slow

Slow mastery. On a damaging hit, reduce the target’s Speed by 10 feet until the start of the attacker’s next turn; multiple Slow hits do not stack beyond 10 feet.

Campaign availability. The site’s Rifle uses this hunting-rifle profile mechanically but remains a Gnome-advanced precision weapon in the setting.

Rifle — D&D 5e / 2014

Category Damage Range Weight Properties
Hunting Rifle 2d10 Piercing 80/240 ft. 8 lb. Ammunition, Reload (5 shots), Two-Handed

The 2014 DMG modern-firearm profile carries five shots before reloading. It has no Weapon Mastery property.

Rifle — Pathfinder 1e

Cost Dmg (S) Dmg (M) Critical Range Misfire Capacity Weight Type
5,000 gp 1d8 1d10 ×4 80 ft. 1 1 12 lbs. B and P

The grooved barrel extends range and accuracy beyond early long-bore firearms. This advanced firearm uses metal cartridges and the normal PF1e advanced-firearm rules.

Rifle — D&D 3.5e

Category Dmg (S) Dmg (M) Critical Range Increment Weight Type
Hunting Rifle; Exotic Firearm 2d8 2d10 ×2 80 ft. 8 lb. Piercing

The 3.5e DMG modern-era hunting rifle uses the normal modern-firearm proficiency rules. Treat this tab as the closest rules equivalent to the site’s Gnome-advanced rifle.

What Changes Between Editions?

  • 2024: the hunting-rifle profile gains Slow mastery.
  • 2014: keeps the same modern-firearm damage, range and five-shot reload without mastery.
  • PF1e: is a single-shot advanced firearm using metal cartridges, touch-AC penetration and misfire rules.
  • 3.5e: uses the DMG hunting-rifle profile and exotic-firearm proficiency.
