Filmmakers
Screen Archive • Filmmakers
The screen archive is organised around films and television, but some creators changed the language of fantasy, horror, monsters and speculative cinema so decisively that their work deserves its own trail through the collection.
Profiled Filmmakers
- Georges Méliès — pioneer of screen illusion, trick photography and fantastical cinema.
- Lon Chaney — transformative performer whose make-up and physical character work helped define early screen horror.
- Ray Harryhausen — stop-motion master whose creatures made mythic adventure tangible on screen.
Filmmakers Represented Across the Archive
These creators do not yet have dedicated filmmaker profiles here, but their work is already strongly represented in the screen archive:
- George A. Romero — begin with Night of the Living Dead (1968) and continue through the site’s zombie-film coverage.
- John Carpenter — begin with The Thing (1982), then follow his horror and science-fiction entries.
- Peter Jackson — begin with The Fellowship of the Ring and the wider Middle-earth film archive.
- Guillermo del Toro — begin with Pan’s Labyrinth and continue into monsters, superheroes and science fiction.
- Hayao Miyazaki — begin with Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke.
