feat Improved Trip

Improved Trip (General)

This material is Open Game Content, and is licensed for public use under the terms of the Open Game License v1.0a.

Prerequisites: Intelligence 13, Combat Expertise.

Benefit: You do not provoke an attack of opportunity when you attempt to trip an opponent while you are unarmed. You also gain a +4 bonus on your Strength check to trip your opponent.

If you trip an opponent in melee combat, you immediately get a melee attack against that opponent as if you hadn’t used your attack for the trip attempt.

Normal: Without this feat, you provoke an attack of opportunity when you attempt to trip an opponent while you are unarmed.

Special: At 6th level, a monk may select Improved Trip as a bonus feat, even if she does not have the prerequisites.

A fighter may select Improved Trip as one of his fighter bonus feats.

How Improved Trip Works

Improved Trip removes the attack of opportunity normally provoked when you make an unarmed trip attempt and adds +4 to the Strength check used to trip the opponent. A successful melee trip also immediately grants a melee attack against that opponent as though the attack used for the trip had not been spent.

Improved Trip Example

A fighter attempts an unarmed trip against an adjacent enemy. The attempt does not provoke because of Improved Trip, and the fighter adds +4 to the trip Strength check. If the enemy is successfully tripped, the fighter immediately makes the feat’s follow-up melee attack against that enemy.

Prerequisites and Role

  • The normal prerequisites are Intelligence 13 and Combat Expertise.
  • The feat rewards characters who use position and control rather than relying only on damage.
  • The follow-up attack is part of the feat’s benefit and depends on the trip succeeding.
