Tenacious Magic — D&D 3.5e Epic Spell Feat

Tenacious Magic is a D&D 3.5e epic feat that protects one chosen spell or spell-like ability from being permanently ended by a dispel effect. Instead, the magic is suppressed for 1d4 rounds, then returns if it still has a valid duration. It is useful for a favourite ward, enchantment or ongoing magical defence.

D&D 3.5e — Published Epic Feat

At a Glance: Spellcraft 15 ranks; choose one spell you know or one spell-like ability you possess. A dispel that would end that effect suppresses it for 1d4 rounds instead. A separate selection is required for each additional spell or ability protected.

  • Prerequisites Spellcraft 15 ranks.
  • Benefit Choose one spell you know or spell-like ability you possess. Whenever the chosen form of magic would otherwise end due to a dispel effect, the magic is instead only suppressed for 1d4 rounds. The magic still ends when its duration expires, but the suppressed rounds do not count against its duration. You can dismiss your own spell or spell-like ability (if dismissible) or dispel your own tenacious magic normally.
  • Special You can gain this feat multiple times. Each time you take this feat, it applies to a different spell or spell-like ability.

How Suppression Works

Example: A character chooses one long-lasting protective spell for Tenacious Magic. An opponent successfully dispels it while the spell has six rounds of duration remaining. Instead of ending, the effect goes dormant for a rolled 1d4 rounds. If the roll is three, it is inactive for those three rounds, then resumes with its six rounds still available. The suppression time does not consume the spell’s remaining duration.

The feat only changes what happens when a dispel effect would normally end the chosen spell. It does not protect every spell the character casts or prevent a spell from ending for some other reason. The caster can still dismiss the spell if it is dismissible or choose to dispel their own tenacious magic normally.
