feat Quick Draw (General)

Quick Draw (General)

This material is Open Game Content, and is licensed for public use under the terms of the Open Game License v1.0a.

Prerequisite: Base attack bonus +1.

Benefit: You can draw a weapon as a free action instead of as a move action. You can draw a hidden weapon (see the Sleight of Hand skill) as a move action.

A character who has selected this feat may throw weapons at his full normal rate of attacks (much like a character with a bow).

Normal: Without this feat, you may draw a weapon as a move action, or (if your base attack bonus is +1 or higher) as a free action as part of movement. Without this feat, you can draw a hidden weapon as a standard action.

Special: A fighter may select Quick Draw as one of his fighter bonus feats.

What Quick Draw Changes

Quick Draw turns drawing an ordinary weapon from a move action into a free action. It also lets a character draw a hidden weapon as a move action instead of a standard action. The feat is therefore useful whenever changing or producing weapons quickly matters to the action economy.

Thrown Weapons and Full Attacks

The feat is particularly important for characters who throw weapons. A character with enough attacks can draw additional throwing weapons quickly enough to use the normal full rate of attacks, provided suitable weapons are available. Without Quick Draw, repeatedly drawing new weapons can prevent that routine from working efficiently.

Quick Draw Example

A fighter begins a turn with a sword sheathed. With Quick Draw, the sword can be drawn as a free action before attacking, leaving the character’s move action available. A dagger hidden on the character can instead be drawn as a move action because the feat improves the slower hidden-weapon draw as well.

  • Quick Draw changes how quickly a weapon is drawn; it does not by itself change attack penalties, range or the number of attacks a character is entitled to make.
