Stationery

Fine stationery is high-quality writing paper associated with wealthy households, merchants, officials and courts. The sheets are typically about nine inches by six inches and may be embossed, engraved or marked with the owner’s personal seal or heraldic device.

Why It Matters

In a world where messages are carried by hand, the material of a letter can help establish status and authenticity before a reader reaches the signature. Good paper, a recognised seal and a familiar hand can open doors that an anonymous scrap cannot.

Adventure Uses

• Writing formal invitations, petitions or letters of introduction.
• Sending instructions that need to look official.
• Identifying the household or office that produced a document.
• Providing evidence when a forged seal or stolen paper is discovered.

Forgery and Suspicion

Stationery does not prove that a message is genuine. Stolen paper, copied seals and forged handwriting can all be used in deception. A suspicious recipient may compare the seal, paper quality, phrasing and messenger before trusting the contents.
