Silent Whistle
A silent whistle produces a pitch beyond normal human hearing. Animals and other creatures with unusually keen hearing may still hear it clearly.
What It Is For
The whistle is useful for signalling trained animals without creating an obvious audible call for ordinary listeners. Handlers may use different patterns to call, halt or direct a creature if that animal has been trained to recognise them.
Limits
- It is not truly silent to every creature.
- Walls, distance and surrounding noise may still interfere with the signal.
- An animal must be trained or otherwise know what the signal means.
- Creatures with exceptional hearing may notice the whistle even when its user hoped to remain unnoticed.
Adventure Use
A silent whistle can coordinate mounts, hounds or other trained beasts across a short distance, but it can also betray a party to predators or monsters that hear frequencies beyond the human range. In the wrong wilderness, blowing it may attract exactly the thing the party was trying to avoid.
