Portable Altar
A portable altar is a small travelling shrine used by priests, devotees and ritual specialists who need a sacred working surface away from a permanent temple. Most are made of wood and decorated with the symbols, colours or animals associated with a particular deity.
Construction
The top lifts to reveal a storage space for ritual materials. Depending on the cult or region, the compartment may hold incense, oil, small lamps, cords, offerings, sacred tokens, painted tablets or other objects used in worship.
Using It in Play
A portable altar gives a travelling priest a recognisable focus for prayer, offerings and ceremonies. It does not automatically provide magical power; any mechanical benefit must come from a spell, class feature, relic or specific rule.
Social Meaning
The decoration can reveal which deity or cult the owner serves. In friendly territory this may earn hospitality or recognition. In hostile territory it can expose allegiance just as quickly.
Adventure Use
A portable altar can conceal a message, relic, map or forbidden token within its storage compartment. An abandoned one may identify a missing expedition or reveal which divine power was invoked at a remote site.
