Dreamtime Tea — Divinatory Dream Brew
Dreamtime tea is a strange, costly infusion with a complex aroma of citrus and dung. Those who drink it fall unconscious and experience vivid dreams that may reveal an omen of what lies ahead. For some, the dreams become more attractive than waking life.

5.5e / 2024, 5e / 2014 and 3.5e
No mechanics are presented here as official rules for these editions. A conversion should preserve the central bargain: voluntary helplessness in exchange for an uncertain supernatural glimpse of the future, coupled with mental harm and addiction risk.
What Happens When You Drink It?
The drinker slips out of the waking world for minutes at a time. The resulting dream may contain a useful omen, but the established rules deliberately make the revelation unreliable. That uncertainty is important: dreamtime tea is a source of clues and choices, not a guaranteed answer machine.
Addiction & After-effects
Dreamtime tea carries moderate addiction and Wisdom damage in PF1e. Its lore also makes psychological dependence particularly appropriate: repeated users may seek the dream state as an escape even when the divination itself is no longer the real attraction.
Buying or Finding It
At 120 gp per dose in PF1e, dreamtime tea is specialist merchandise rather than an ordinary household infusion. It fits naturally in occult markets, the stock of unusual apothecaries, private collections and the baggage of people prepared to pay heavily for uncertain foreknowledge.
Encounters & Adventure Use
- A patron will fund an expedition only after drinking the tea and asking whether the journey will prosper.
- An important witness is unconscious when the party arrives and cannot be awakened until the drug runs its course.
- Two users receive apparently contradictory omens about the same decision.
- A dealer sells counterfeit dreamtime tea while keeping the genuine supply for a secret client.
- A habitual user no longer cares whether the dreams predict anything; they simply do not want to wake.
