Black Knight (Dane Whitman)
Dane Whitman is a fictional comic book superhero in the Marvel Comics universe, the company’s third person to bear the name Black Knight. Created by writer Roy Thomas and artist John Buscema, he first appeared in The Avengers Vol. 1, #47 (Dec. 1967).
The character was featured in a four-issue mini-series in 1990 and two one-shots in 1996 and 2007. Starting in 2015, he was the main character in Marvel’s All-New, All-Different Marvel ongoing Black Knight series, the first ongoing series to feature Dane Whitman as the titular character; however, this was short-lived as dwindling sales resulted in the series’ cancellation after five issues.

The Crusader
The Black Knight is widely thought to be the greatest swordsman alive today. He receives a +8 bonus to hit and damage when using any sort
of sword. He also triples the threat range of any blade in his hands. He is
also a master of defense and when using a sword he receives a +4 Dodge bonus
to his AC.
The Pendragon
The Black Knight has been selected by the Lady of the Lake as the Pendragon of the modern age. He possesses a number of mystical abilities due to her blessing. Many of his powers have not yet been revealed but her certainly possesses more.
At will true seeing
- +6 to save vs. any sort of mental or emotion control
- +6 to save vs. magical attacks
Possessions
The Black Knight possesses an amulet given to him by the Lady of the Lake. When he says the word ‘Avalon’ he summons a number of powerful magical items granted to him as the current Pendragon.
The Sword of Light
The Sword of Light is considered a +5 long sword. It inflicts 2d6+5 damage when used in combat. It automatically bypasses any sort of damage reduction provided by armor, magic, or epic. Dane can channel the energy absorbed through the Shield of Night through the Sword of Light as a blast. The blast travels up to 300ft and inflicts 1d6 damage per 10 points of energy absorbed by the shield. Dane must make a ranged touch attack to strike with the blast.
The Shield of Night
The Shield of Night is a mystical kite shield capable of absorbing any energy directed at it. Dane has used it to block and absorb the energy of
everything from Nitro’s explosive blasts to fire to punches. Dane can use the shield to intercept any attack targeted at him to absorb the energy into the shield.(this includes kinetic energy). The shield has not yet shown any limit to what can be absorbed. Up to 4 times per round he can make a defense roll at +23 vs. any attacks. If he defeats the attack roll of the attacker (or the DC, if the attack is an area affecting one) he absorbs the energy into the Shield of Night. He cannot be flat-footed when attempting to absorb energy.
Armor of Avalon
The armor Whitman currently wears is virtually weightless and super strong. It provides him with DR 15/-. It also provides Dane with a +4 resistance bonus to all saving throws and moderate fortification
Mount Strider
Strider is the latest in the Black Knight’s list of winged steeds. Strider is a mystical creature like Valinor rather than a genetically engineered one like Aragorn, but he is unique in that he possesses mystical powers of his own. Most notably, Strider is capable of far greater airspeeds than either of Dane’s previous mounts; he is easily capable of breaking the sound barrier. Dane can verbally summon Strider to appear at his side or return to Avalon as he pleased. While mounted on Strider, Dane is magically protected from any harsh environments such as the depths of the ocean. While riding Strider, Dane is magically able to breathe regardless of his environment.
