Chaos Beast
“Unleash the terror of the Chaos Beast: a nightmarish creature that twists reality and drains your very essence!”

The Chaos Beast is a grotesque and ever-shifting entity, a horrific amalgamation of barbed tentacles, glaring eyes, and gnashing teeth. Its body is a mass of writhing, amorphous flesh that seems to melt and reform at lightning speed, creating an unsettling spectacle of limbs and appendages. Each moment, it can appear to possess dozens of claws, stingers, or other forms, but they vanish as quickly as they materialize. Its skin glistens with a slick, iridescent sheen, shifting colors unpredictably, reflecting its chaotic nature. The eyes, varying in number and size, seem to gaze into the very souls of those who dare to look upon it, filled with madness and an insatiable hunger.
Behavior:
Chaos Beasts exhibit erratic and unpredictable behavior, embodying the essence of chaos itself. They are often solitary but may congregate in small groups when drawn together by strong chaotic energies. In combat, they strike with wild abandon, using their rapidly changing forms to confuse and disorient their enemies. They attack blindly, often unable to distinguish friend from foe, and revel in the terror they instill. Outside of battle, they move with a liquid grace, flowing through their environment as if gravity and structure have little hold over them. Their laughter—if it can be called that—is a dissonant cacophony, echoing their manic joy in causing chaos.
Habitat:
Chaos Beasts thrive in realms of extreme chaos, such as the chaotic layers of the Abyss or other extraplanar dimensions. They can also be found in places where reality is thin, such as areas afflicted by wild magic or chaotic storms. These habitats are often warped and unstable, reflecting the chaotic nature of the beasts themselves, filled with shifting landscapes, impossible geometries, and bizarre creatures. Occasionally, they manifest in the material world, particularly in locations where chaos and turmoil reign, such as battlefields or during great disasters.
Modus Operandi:
The modus operandi of a Chaos Beast revolves around its ability to spread chaos and confusion. In combat, it uses its Corporeal Instability ability to curse enemies, turning them into amorphous masses that cannot effectively fight back. It relies on its superior mobility and unpredictability to outmaneuver opponents, striking from unexpected angles and retreating before a counterattack can be mounted. The Chaos Beast often employs hit-and-run tactics, using its environment to its advantage, leveraging the terrain’s instability to create obstacles for its enemies. Its attacks are relentless, and it thrives in the confusion and fear it generates.
Motivation:
Chaos Beasts are driven by an insatiable urge to create disorder and disruption. Their existence is a manifestation of chaos itself, and they find joy in the suffering and confusion of others. They are not inherently evil but are indifferent to morality; their actions are guided solely by their chaotic nature. When they manifest in the material plane, it is often to feed off the chaos generated by conflicts, disasters, or powerful magical disturbances. Ultimately, a Chaos Beast exists to embody chaos, seeking to unravel order and reshape the world into a formless, chaotic mass that reflects its own twisted existence.

Traits
- Amorphous: The Chaos Beast can move through a space as narrow as 1 inch wide without squeezing. It can change its shape as a bonus action.
- Corporeal Instability: Whenever a creature hits the Chaos Beast with a melee attack, it must succeed on a DC 17 Wisdom saving throw or become cursed with an amorphous body. The cursed creature becomes unable to hold or use any item and suffers a -4 penalty on attack rolls. This effect lasts until the curse is removed.
- Magic Resistance: The Chaos Beast has advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects.
- Innate Spellcasting: The Chaos Beast’s innate spellcasting ability is Charisma (spell save DC 15). It can innately cast the following spells, requiring no material components:
- At will: Mage Hand, Minor Illusion
- 3/day each: Blur, Fear
- 1/day each: Confusion, Polymorph (self only)
Actions
- Multiattack: The Chaos Beast makes three attacks: one with its Tentacle and two with its Claw.
- Tentacle: Melee Weapon Attack: +10 to hit, reach 15 ft., one target. Hit: 18 (2d10 + 5) bludgeoning damage. The target must succeed on a DC 17 Strength saving throw or be grappled (escape DC 17). The Chaos Beast can grapple one Large or smaller creature.
- Claw: Melee Weapon Attack: +10 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 14 (2d8 + 5) slashing damage plus 9 (2d8) psychic damage.
- Warping Strike (Recharge 5-6): The Chaos Beast targets one creature it can see within 30 feet of it. The target must make a DC 17 Intelligence saving throw. On a failed save, the target takes 27 (6d8) psychic damage and is confused for 1 minute (the target can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success). On a successful save, the target takes half damage and isn’t confused.
Tactics
- Initial Approach: The Chaos Beast prefers to ambush its foes from an advantageous position, utilizing its Amorphous trait to hide in unusual terrain or blend into chaotic environments. It uses its innate spellcasting to disorient opponents with Fear or Blur to avoid being hit.
- Targeting Weaknesses: It prioritizes spellcasters and ranged attackers first, using Tentacle to grapple and isolate them. Once a foe is restrained, it uses Claw attacks to deal heavy damage while the victim struggles.
- Psychic Assault: If it finds itself outnumbered or in a losing position, the Chaos Beast will retreat momentarily to regroup, then unleash Warping Strike on the most dangerous opponent. This allows it to sow chaos among the enemy ranks and potentially turn the tide of battle.
- Retreat: If its hit points drop below half, it will utilize Polymorph to transform into a less threatening form to escape, leveraging its amorphous nature to squeeze through tight spaces or flee into the shadows.
Environment
The Chaos Beast thrives in areas of chaotic energy, such as:
- Twisted forests filled with warped trees and bizarre flora.
- Ruins of ancient civilizations where reality seems thin.
- Extraplanar realms or regions affected by wild magic.

[This content was created for the Pathfinder rules by Paizo Publishing LLC and is part of the Pathfinder RPG product line.]
This thing is a horrid mass of barbed tentacles, glaring eyes, and gnashing teeth, twisting upon itself and reshaping into new forms.
A chaos beast’s form changes without any goal or purpose. Though at any particular second a chaos beast may appear to have dozens of limbs, whether claws, tentacles, stingers, and so on, the lightning-quick shifts of its body mean most of these are gone before it has a chance to use them, and its attacks are always treated as claws regardless of the creature’s appearance.

SPECIAL ABILITIES |
Corporeal Instability (Su) Claw – contact (curse); save Fort DC 17; effect amorphous body and 1 Wisdom drain per round (see below); cure 3 consecutive saves. The save DC is Constitution-based. A creature cursed with an amorphous body becomes a spongy, shapeless mass. Unless the victim manages to control the effect (see below), its shape constantly melts, flows, writhes, and boils. An affected creature is unable to hold or use any item. Clothing, armor, helmets, and rings become useless. Large items worn or carried’ armor, Backpacks, even shirts’ hamper more than help, reducing the victim’s Dexterity score by 4. Speed is reduced to 10 feet or one-quarter normal, whichever is less. The victim gains the amorphous quality, but cannot cast spells or use magic items, and it attacks blindly, unable to distinguish friend from foe (4 penalty on attack rolls and a 50% miss chance, regardless of the attack roll). A victim can temporarily regain its own shape by taking a standard action to attempt a DC 15 Will save (this check DC does not vary for a chaos beast with different Hit Dice or ability scores). A success reestablishes the creature’s normal form for 1 minute. Spells that change the victims shape (such as alter self, Beast Shape, elemental body, and polymorph) do not remove the curse, but hold the creature in a stable form (which might not be its own form, depending on the spell) and prevent additional Wisdom drain for the duration of the spell; shapechange and stoneskin have a similar effect. The victim takes 1 point of Wisdom drain from mental shock every round that it ends its turn in an amorphous shape ‘upon being drained to 1 Wisdom, further Wisdom drain ceases and the amorphous body effect is permanent until removed via magic (no further number of saving throws can cure the condition at this time). Resistant to Transformation (Ex) Transmutation effects, such as polymorphing or petrification, force a chaos beast into a new shape, but at the start of its next turn, it immediately returns to its normal form as a free action. |
