Caladrius, the Dove of Divine Mercy

Caladrius, the Dove of Divine Mercy
Create

The Caladrius is a luminous, dove-like creature cloaked in immaculate white feathers that shimmer with soft iridescence. Its golden eyes gleam with ancient wisdom and tranquil power. When it takes flight, radiant light spills from its wings in a trail of drifting motes, and a faint, sacred hum fills the air. Its presence brings with it an aura of peace so profound that even wild beasts pause in reverence.

Behavior

Reclusive and serene, the Caladrius avoids conflict, choosing to observe the world with quiet compassion. It is highly intelligent, capable of communicating through melodic, telepathic impressions that stir emotion more than words. Though it bears no malice, the Caladrius will not linger in the presence of evil or cruelty, vanishing without a trace if threatened or trapped. It is drawn to suffering, not out of pity, but out of a deep, divine calling to mend what can—and should—be healed.

Habitat

Caladrius are vanishingly rare, found only in places of pure intent and spiritual clarity. Their favored haunts include sun-drenched mountain peaks, untouched forest glades, and the sanctified halls of ancient temples. Some legends speak of them appearing in royal courts at moments of great crisis or in the quiet corners of hospices on the brink of despair. In the celestial realms, they dwell in radiant sanctuaries beyond mortal reach.

Modus Operandi

When a Caladrius is drawn to a dying or diseased creature, it will settle nearby in silence. It then gazes directly into the afflicted’s eyes. Should it perceive a will to live and a soul unburdened by deep corruption, the Caladrius draws the illness into itself. For a brief moment, its feathers blacken with shadow—only to burst into radiant light as the disease is utterly destroyed.

If instead the creature’s fate is sealed or its spirit is ready to pass on, the Caladrius will turn its head away. This solemn gesture is a final, unspoken truth: death has already come.

The Caladrius is immune to disease, radiant damage, and charm effects. It never initiates violence; when harmed, it vanishes in a silent flash of light, reappearing in a distant, safe haven.

Motivation

Embodied mercy, the Caladrius acts as a vessel of divine healing and moral discernment. It seeks to alleviate suffering—but never at the expense of cosmic balance. It will not heal those who exploit, destroy, or willingly sow pain. Nor can it be compelled by magic or force; the Caladrius answers only to the quiet call of its sacred purpose.

Divine Presence.

The Caladrius radiates a calming aura in a 30-foot radius. Friendly creatures in the aura have advantage on saving throws against being charmed or frightened. Hostile creatures must succeed on a DC 18 Wisdom saving throw at the start of their turn or be unable to take hostile actions until the start of their next turn.

Flight of Mercy.

The Caladrius ignores difficult terrain and can hover even while incapacitated. It leaves behind radiant motes of light wherever it flies.

Heaven’s Judgment (1/Day).

As an action, the Caladrius gazes into the soul of a creature it can see within 30 feet. The target must make a DC 18 Charisma saving throw:

  • On a failure, the Caladrius perceives the creature’s inner truth:
    • If the target is good-aligned or desires to live, it is healed of all curses, diseases, and poisons, regains 70 (10d10) hit points, and gains advantage on all saving throws for 1 minute.
    • If the target is evil-aligned or has accepted death, it gains no benefit and instead has disadvantage on death saving throws for the next hour.

This ability has no effect on undead or constructs.

Magic Resistance.

The Caladrius has advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects.

Spellcasting.

The Caladrius’s innate spellcasting ability is Charisma (spell save DC 19, +11 to hit). It can cast the following spells innately, requiring no components:

  • At will: detect evil and good, calm emotions, lesser restoration, sanctuary
  • 3/day each: greater restoration, dispel evil and good, revivify
  • 1/day each: heal, holy aura, plane shift (self only)

Actions

Radiant Pulse (Recharge 5–6).

The Caladrius releases a wave of radiant energy in a 30-foot radius.

  • Allies of its choice in the area regain 30 (6d8 + 3) hit points and can end one condition: charmed, frightened, paralyzed, or poisoned.
  • Hostile creatures must make a DC 18 Constitution saving throw, taking 27 (6d8) radiant damage on a failure, or half as much on a success.

Reactions

Merciful Escape.

When the Caladrius is reduced to 0 hit points, it instead vanishes in a flash of radiant light, teleporting to a safe location as if by the word of recall spell. It leaves behind a single pristine feather that radiates soft warmth for 24 hours.

Tactics

  • The Caladrius avoids combat, acting only in self-defense or to protect the innocent.
  • It uses Radiant Pulse and healing magic to sustain allies while remaining out of reach.
  • If endangered, it uses Merciful Escape or plane shift to retreat.

Optional: Legendary Caladrius

If the Caladrius serves a divine purpose in your campaign, you may treat it as a Legendary Creature with 3 legendary actions:

Legendary Actions (1/Turn):

  • Soothing Glance. One creature the Caladrius can see regains 15 hit points and gains inspiration (1d8).
  • Judging Wingbeat. The Caladrius moves up to its flying speed without provoking opportunity attacks.
  • Purge Corruption (Costs 2 Actions). One creature within 60 feet must succeed on a DC 18 Constitution saving throw or lose all temporary hit points and become vulnerable to radiant damage for 1 minute.

Divine Presence (Su)
The Caladrius radiates a tranquil aura in a 30-foot radius. Allies within the area gain a +2 sacred bonus on saving throws against fear, charm, and disease effects. This is a mind-affecting effect. The save DC is Charisma-based.

Heaven’s Judgment (Su)
Once per day as a full-round action, the Caladrius may fix its gaze upon a single living creature within 60 feet. The target must succeed on a DC 22 Will save or be judged by divine insight.

  • If the target is evil-aligned or has embraced death: it gains 1d4 negative levels and becomes shaken for 1 hour. This is a death and mind-affecting effect.

Radiant Pulse (Su)Recharge 5 rounds
As a standard action, the Caladrius releases a pulse of radiant light in a 30-foot radius.

  • Allies in the area regain 6d8+12 hit points and may immediately attempt a new saving throw against one ongoing condition (including fear, disease, or ability damage).
  • Enemies must succeed on a DC 21 Fortitude save or take 6d8 points of radiant damage and become blinded for 1 round (half damage and no blindness on a successful save). This is a light-based effect. The save DC is Constitution-based.

Merciful Ascension (Ex)
When reduced to 0 hit points, the Caladrius vanishes in a burst of radiant feathers, as if affected by word of recall, returning to a celestial sanctuary. It leaves behind a single pristine white feather imbued with divine grace. A creature carrying this feather gains a +2 sacred bonus on Heal checks, and may use remove disease as a spell-like ability (CL 10th) once before the feather fades.

TACTICS

  • Before Combat The Caladrius avoids confrontation, preferring to cast sanctuary or calm emotions to de-escalate hostilities.
  • During Combat It remains airborne, using Flyby Attack to stay mobile while healing allies with greater restoration and radiant pulse. Against pivotal targets, it uses heaven’s judgment to reward the worthy or afflict the wicked.
  • Morale If endangered or its healing has no effect, it uses plane shift or triggers merciful ascension to escape.

DESCRIPTION

A divine avian being, the Caladrius appears as a snow-white bird of radiant grace, with feathers that shimmer in sunlight and eyes of molten gold. Thought to be an omen of mercy or judgment, it appears only in times of great suffering, often in the company of saints, kings, or the mortally ill. Its gaze is said to strip away all deception, and its presence either heralds miraculous healing—or solemn passing.

Description

A shining white bird with an angelic presence, the Caladrius glows faintly with divine energy. Its eyes are pools of golden light, and each beat of its wings releases motes of radiant energy. Known in myth as the healer of kings and the judge of souls, the Caladrius appears only in moments of great suffering—or great hope.

Combat

The Caladrius avoids combat whenever possible. If pressed, it will defend the innocent with radiant healing bursts and blinding light, retreating when its sacred purpose is complete.

Dazzling Light (Su)

Any creature struck by the Caladrius’s wing must succeed on a DC 21 Fortitude save or be dazzled for 1 minute. Creatures already dazzled by this ability that fail a second save are instead blinded for 1 round. This is a light-based effect. The save DC is Charisma-based.

Divine Presence (Su)

Allies within a 30-foot aura gain a +2 sacred bonus on saves against fear, disease, and mind-affecting effects. Enemies within the same radius must succeed on a DC 21 Will save at the beginning of their turn or be unable to perform hostile actions for 1 round (as per sanctuary, but without a concentration check). This is a mind-affecting effect.

Heaven’s Judgment (Su)1/day

As a full-round action, the Caladrius may gaze into the soul of a living creature within 60 feet. The target must make a DC 22 Will save or be judged by celestial insight.

  • If the creature is good-aligned or wishes to live:
    • It is cured of all diseases, poisons, curses, and ability damage.
    • It regains 80 hit points and gains a +2 morale bonus on all saves for 1 minute.
  • If the creature is evil-aligned or has accepted death:
    • It suffers 1d4 negative levels and is shaken for 1 hour.
This is a death, mind-affecting, and gaze-based ability. The save DC is Charisma-based.

Radiant Pulse (Su)Recharge 5 rounds

As a standard action, the Caladrius releases a radiant healing pulse in a 30-foot radius.

  • Allies are healed for 6d8+12 hit points, and may immediately attempt a new save against one ongoing condition.
  • Enemies must make a DC 21 Fortitude save or take 6d8 radiant damage and be blinded for 1 round (half damage and no blindness on a success). This is a light-based and healing effect. The save DC is Constitution-based.

Spell-Like Abilities (Sp)

Caster level 12th. Save DCs are Charisma-based.

  • Constant (self): true seeing, detect evil
  • At will: calm emotions (DC 17), sanctuary (DC 16), detect thoughts (DC 17), lesser restoration
  • 3/day: remove curse, dispel evil (DC 20), greater restoration, cure critical wounds (DC 20)
  • 1/day: heal, holy word (DC 22), plane shift (self only), breath of life (as per revivify)

Merciful Ascension (Ex)

When reduced to 0 hit points, the Caladrius vanishes in a flash of radiant feathers, as if under the effect of word of recall, returning to a celestial haven. It leaves behind a single glowing white feather. If carried, this feather grants the bearer a +2 bonus on Heal checks and allows them to cast remove disease (CL 10th) once before crumbling into dust.

Tactics

  • Before Combat: Uses sanctuary and calm emotions to avoid hostilities.
  • During Combat: Uses Flyby Attack to stay aloft, healing allies while using Radiant Pulse to disrupt enemies. Avoids lethal force, targeting enemies’ morale and vitality instead.
  • Morale: The Caladrius will never kill. If the battle turns dire or its healing is ineffective, it uses plane shift or allows Merciful Ascension to activate.

Lore (Knowledge: Planes or Religion)

DC 21: The Caladrius is a celestial creature of healing and judgment, often appearing at the deathbeds of kings and prophets.
DC 26: Its gaze can cure the dying or condemn the wicked to a divine sickness. Only the pure of heart ever earn its favor.
