Butterfae, the Sylvan Glade Enchanters

Butterfae, the Sylvan Glade Enchanters
Create

Butterfae are among the smallest of the fey, rarely reaching more than eight inches in height. Their features are delicate and slightly otherworldly, with high cheekbones, tapered ears, and luminous, expressive eyes. Each Butterfae bears a unique pair of wings—some broad and vibrant like a butterfly’s, others soft and muted like those of a moth, and still others nearly translucent, resembling strands of gossamer caught in moonlight. Their presence often feels more like a breeze or a shimmer than a solid figure.

Behavior

Timid by nature but driven by curiosity, they spend most of their lives in observation rather than interaction. They are elusive, preferring to remain unseen, though they rarely act with hostility. When they do engage with others, it’s often through gentle mischief—harmless pranks, confusing trails, or whispered laughter in the leaves. Butterfae are deeply communal and often travel or live in small groups. Though they shy away from conflict, they are fiercely protective of their kin and their home.

Habitat

Butterfae reside deep within primeval forests and untouched glades, favoring areas rich with natural magic and minimal intrusion from the outside world. Their homes are woven from moss, flower petals, and spider silk, often hidden high in the canopy or within hollowed roots. These enchanted groves are frequently protected by natural illusions and silent wards. Butterfae live in harmony with local wildlife and are often found in the company of other fey creatures, druids, or spirits of the land.

Nature and Magic

Butterfae possess an innate connection to the wild magic of nature. Their very presence encourages growth—flowers bloom in their footsteps, vines coil more thickly where they rest, and animals grow calm in their wake. This natural magic is not taught, but instinctive. They often carry a personal wand or charm, gifted upon reaching maturity, which serves as a focus for their magical abilities. They use this magic to nurture, protect, and restore, rarely to harm.

Role in the World

Often mistaken for pixies or sprites, Butterfae are a distinct lineage of fey, deeply attuned to the cycles of the forest and the balance of life. They are rarely seen by mortals, though they have been known to guide lost travelers, reward acts of kindness, or defend sacred groves from intrusion. Though they have no formal hierarchy or kingdom, Butterfae sometimes act as emissaries for more powerful forest spirits, or as messengers for ancient fey courts.

To see a Butterfae is considered a rare blessing. To earn its trust is something far greater.

Fey Ancestry

The Butterfae has advantage on saving throws against being charmed, and magic can’t put it to sleep.

Magic Resistance

The Butterfae has advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects.

Innate Spellcasting

The Butterfae’s innate spellcasting ability is Charisma (spell save DC 14). It can cast the following spells innately, requiring no material components:

  • At will: Dancing Lights, Druidcraft, Animal Messenger, Calm Emotions, Invisibility (self only), Speak with Animals, Speak with Plants
  • 3/day each: Entangle, Goodberry, Magic Fang, Heat Metal, Faerie Fire
  • 1/day each: Polymorph, Summon Beast (Fey variant)

Wand of Verdant Bloom (Recharge 5–6)

As a bonus action, the Butterfae can activate its magical wand to cast one of the following:

  • Entangle (centered on the Butterfae; it is unaffected)
  • Goodberry (creates 1d4 berries that last 1 hour)
  • Blooming Pulse (see below)

Blooming Pulse (Recharge 6)

The Butterfae releases a burst of radiant flora in a 30-foot radius. Creatures of its choice within range must succeed on a DC 14 Constitution saving throw or become restrained by flowering vines (save ends at the end of their turns). While restrained, they take 2 (1d4) radiant damage at the start of each turn. The area becomes difficult terrain for 1 minute.

Actions

Gleaming Touch. Melee Spell Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target.
Hit: 4 (1d4 + 2) radiant damage. The target must succeed on a DC 14 Charisma saving throw or suffer disadvantage on its next attack roll or saving throw (Butterfae’s choice).

Reactions

Flutter Dodge. When targeted by an attack the Butterfae can see, it may use its reaction to fly up to 10 feet in any direction without provoking opportunity attacks.

Tactics

Butterfae avoid direct confrontation. They use illusions, terrain control, and summoning spells to disorient threats and protect their forest. If endangered, they flee rather than fight to the end. They rarely attack unless provoked or defending something sacred.

Lore

Butterfae are rare and reclusive guardians of deep forests and ancient glades. No taller than a child’s hand, they possess an extraordinary connection to natural magic. Though timid, they are deeply intelligent and fiercely protective of their homes. Druids and dryads often consider Butterfae sacred allies, and tales speak of travelers who—after earning their trust—never became lost in the woods again.

Distant cousins to pixies, Butterfae are among the smallest of fey, rarely reaching 8 inches in height. They also contain some of the greatest affinity to magic of all fae. Like pixies, they enjoy sylvan life and often take their homes deep in forests.

Butterfae vaguely resemble tiny little elves with insect wings. Despite what the name implies, Butterfae wings can be of any sort, resembling butterfly wings, moth, or plain gossamer wings.

Combat

Butterfae rarely ever engage people in battle. When they do, they use their spell-like abilities or their wands, or they flee.

Butterfae Wand: Upon reaching adulthood, Butterfae receive a special wand. All wands have the following traits.

Butterfae wands also contain one other spell usable once per day (a 1st level druid spell or a 0 level cleric, witch, or sorcerer spell), another usable three times per day (a 1st or 2nd level druid spell or a 0 level cleric, witch, or sorcerer spell), and one other spell usable once per day (4th level druid or 2nd level cleric, witch, or sorcerer spell. These wands are useless by anyone than who the wand was given to.

Speak with plants and Animals: Butterfae can speak with plants and animals as per the spells at will.
