Attack Bonus
An attack roll is a d20 plus the attack modifiers used by your game. Choose the calculation for your rules edition before adding bonuses or penalties from equipment, spells and conditions.
D&D 5.5e / 2024. With a proficient melee weapon, use d20 + Strength modifier + Proficiency Bonus; with a proficient ranged weapon, use d20 + Dexterity modifier + Proficiency Bonus. A Finesse weapon can use Strength or Dexterity. Spell attacks use the spellcasting ability modifier plus Proficiency Bonus. A ranged attack beyond normal range has Disadvantage, not a numeric range penalty. 2024 attack-roll rules.
D&D 5e / 2014. A proficient melee weapon ordinarily uses d20 + Strength modifier + proficiency bonus; a proficient ranged weapon uses d20 + Dexterity modifier + proficiency bonus. Finesse and Thrown properties, spells and class features can change the applicable modifier. Long range ordinarily imposes disadvantage rather than a fixed attack penalty. 2014 attack-roll rules.
Pathfinder 1e. Melee attack bonus = base attack bonus + Strength modifier + size modifier. Ranged attack bonus = base attack bonus + Dexterity modifier + size modifier + applicable range penalty. Weapon properties, feats and other effects can alter the roll. Pathfinder combat statistics.
D&D 3.5e. Melee attack bonus = base attack bonus + Strength modifier + size modifier. Ranged attack bonus = base attack bonus + Dexterity modifier + size modifier + applicable range penalty. Apply other relevant modifiers such as feats, spells and equipment. 3.5e combat statistics.
