Itzpapálotl is the Obsidian Butterfly, remembered as a patron goddess who guides Toltec-Chichimec peoples from Chicomoztoc, the Hill of the Seven Caves. She is dangerous, ancestral and transformative rather than simply “a goddess of sacrifice and the underworld.” In play, she rules the moment when a people leaves safety, accepts a new road and risks becoming something different.

Traits
Divine Resistance (4/Day). If Itzpapálotl fails a saving throw, she can choose to succeed instead.
Obsidian Wings. A creature that hits Itzpapálotl with a melee attack while within 10 feet takes 18 (4d8) slashing damage.
Seven-Cave Passage. Itzpapálotl can move through an unoccupied cave mouth, doorway or deep shadow and emerge from another such opening within 300 feet as part of the same movement.
Butterfly of Fire and Bone. When reduced below half hit points, her wing edges ignite. Her weapon attacks deal an extra 13 (3d8) fire damage.
Divine Spellcasting
Charisma is her spellcasting ability (spell save DC 31, +23 to hit).
At will: darkness, dimension door, fear, passwall, stone shape.
3/day each: fire storm, plane shift, wall of fire.
1/day each: gate, incendiary cloud, shapechange.
Actions
Multiattack. Itzpapálotl makes four Obsidian Wing attacks.
Obsidian Wing. Melee or Ranged Weapon Attack: +24 to hit, reach 15 ft. or range 240 ft.; Hit: 66 (4d10 + 13 slashing plus 6d8 fire) damage.
Shard Swarm (Recharge 5–6). Razor-edged obsidian fills a 60-foot cone. Creatures make a DC 31 Dexterity save, taking 88 (16d10) slashing damage on a failure, half on a success. A failed save also reduces speed by 20 feet until the end of the target’s next turn.
Open Chicomoztoc (1/Day). Seven dark cave-mouths appear within 180 feet for 1 minute. Itzpapálotl and willing creatures may enter one and emerge from another. Enemies entering a cave must make a DC 31 Wisdom save or emerge from a randomly chosen mouth and become Frightened until the end of their next turn.
Legendary Actions
- Wingbeat. Move up to half speed without provoking Opportunity Attacks.
- Obsidian Wing (Costs 2). Make one Obsidian Wing attack.
- Burn the Old Road (Costs 3). A 30-foot-long path within 120 feet ignites; creatures on it take 36 (8d8) fire damage, Dexterity DC 31 half.
Mythic Trait — The Cocoon Breaks
Once per encounter at 0 hit points, Itzpapálotl collapses into a shell of black glass, then erupts with 390 hit points. Creatures within 60 feet make a DC 31 Dexterity save or take 55 (10d10) slashing damage and are pushed 30 feet.

Worship in the Living World
At El Cerrito and in traditions preserved in the Historia Tolteca-Chichimeca, Itzpapálotl belongs to stories of origin and movement. Chicomoztoc is the Hill of the Seven Caves from which peoples emerge; Itzpapálotl guides them as patron goddess. That makes her especially important to communities who define themselves through remembered migration rather than permanent rootedness.
Obsidian gives her imagery a second edge. It is beautiful, useful and dangerously sharp—an ideal divine material for a patron whose gifts require leaving one condition before the next can begin.
Mythic Identity
Butterfly imagery in Mesoamerican art carries overlapping associations with fire, warriors, death, fertility and rebirth. Itzpapálotl turns those themes darker: the Obsidian Butterfly combines emergence with appetite and danger. She is the instant a sealed cocoon breaks, a cave mouth opens or a people accepts that the old road cannot be walked backward unchanged.
Divine Realm — Chicomoztoc
Chicomoztoc, the Hill of the Seven Caves, is treated here as Itzpapálotl’s principal divine threshold. Seven great openings lead to different roads of origin. The caves are not prison cells or a generic underworld; they are places of beginning, departure and lineage memory.
What Is Itzpapálotl Doing Now?
The famine is forcing families, labourers and entire small communities to leave lands that can no longer feed them. Itzpapálotl has begun reopening ancient paths remembered only in songs, painted histories and family claims. Some lead toward food and refuge. Others lead into territorial disputes that have slept for generations.
She is furious with rulers who describe displaced people as rootless. To Itzpapálotl, migration can be sacred precisely because origin is remembered while place changes. Her signs are appearing on boundary stones, cave shrines and the obsidian tools carried by scouts. She rewards guides who get people through danger and punishes those who exploit refugees by stealing their names, kinship or right to return.

Divine Relic — Seven-Cave Obsidian
An original game relic made from seven fitted obsidian flakes. Once per week, assembling them against a natural rock face opens a temporary passage to a safe cave the bearer has personally visited. The relic refuses to open a road for slavers or anyone knowingly transporting captives for sale.
Regional Effects
- Old Roads Reappear. Forgotten trails become visible at dawn to travellers genuinely seeking refuge.
- Obsidian Warns. Obsidian blades and tools ring softly when their bearer approaches a deliberately concealed cave or ambush.
- Butterflies Cross Burned Ground. After destructive fire, butterflies appear before the first green shoots return.
Relationships
Tlazolteotl: source traditions can overlap their maternal and earth-linked identities; the campaign keeps them distinct divine persons whose cults sometimes share older names or functions.
Tezcatlipoca: both operate through dangerous uncertainty, but Itzpapálotl protects the legitimacy of movement while Tezcatlipoca tests ambition and power.
