Mount Parnassus

Mount Parnassus

Mount Parnassus
Caesar van Everdingen (1616/1617–1678) Four Muses and Pegasus on Parnassus

On the slopes of Mount Parnassus stands Delphi, the great oracle of Apollo. The Castalian spring was sacred to pilgrims approaching the sanctuary. Greek tradition also associates the mountain with the Muses, giving it a lasting connection to poetry, music and learning.

Parnassus is also the site of several unrelated minor events:

  • Orestes spent his time in hiding on Mount Parnassus.
  • Parnassus is sacred to the god Dionysus.
  • The Corycian Cave, located on the slopes of Parnassus, is sacred to Pan and to the Muses.

Parnassus is also the home to a herd of  Pegasus.
