The double-barrelled shotgun places two advanced scatter-gun barrels side by side, allowing them to be fired independently or discharged together in a devastating but less accurate double shot.

This is an expensive precision weapon tied to the same exceptional gnome gunsmithing tradition as the advanced shotgun. Even where black powder is familiar, the cartridges, locks and fitted twin-barrel mechanism make this weapon rare.

Double-Barrelled Shotgun in the Campaign

Two loaded barrels give the wielder a second immediate shot or the option of a risky double discharge. Once both are empty, however, the weapon returns to the same cartridge-supply and maintenance problem faced by other advanced guns.

Double-Barrelled Shotgun Rules by Edition

Double-Barrelled Shotgun — D&D 5.5e / 2024

Campaign conversion. No separate double-barrelled shotgun profile is required by the core 2024 firearm table, so this version begins with the 2024 Shotgun.

Damage Range Weight Properties Mastery
2d8 Piercing per barrel 30/90 ft. 8 lb. Ammunition (Firearms), Reload (2 shots), Two-Handed Push

Double shot. If both barrels are loaded, the wielder can fire both at the same target as one Attack. Make two attack rolls, each at −4. Each hit deals 2d8 Piercing and expends one shot. Push can apply only once to the target from that double shot.

Double-Barrelled Shotgun — D&D 5e / 2014

Campaign conversion. Use the 2014 Shotgun profile with two loaded barrels.

Damage Range Weight Properties
2d8 Piercing per barrel 30/90 ft. 8 lb. Ammunition, Reload (2 shots), Two-Handed

Double shot. If both barrels are loaded, make two attack rolls against one target as one Attack, each at −4. Each hit deals normal shotgun damage and expends one shell. This is a campaign conversion, not a separate 2014 DMG weapon entry.

Double-Barrelled Shotgun — Pathfinder 1e

Cost Dmg (S) Dmg (M) Critical Range Misfire Capacity Weight Type Special
7,000 gp 1d6 1d8 ×2 20 ft. 1–2 2 15 lbs. B and P scatter

The barrels can be fired separately or together. A bullet double shot makes two attacks at −4 against one target. When both barrels fire bullets together, each barrel deals 2d6 damage for a Small weapon or 2d8 for a Medium weapon, for 4d6 or 4d8 total if both hit. It uses metal cartridges loaded with bullets or pellets.

Double-Barrelled Shotgun — D&D 3.5e

Campaign conversion. Use the DMG modern Shotgun as the base weapon.

Dmg (S) Dmg (M) Critical Range Increment Weight Type
2d6 per barrel 2d8 per barrel ×2 30 ft. 8 lb. Piercing

It holds two shells. The barrels can be fired separately. If both are fired simultaneously, make two attack rolls at −4 against one target; each hit deals normal shotgun damage. This double-shot rule is the campaign conversion rather than a separate core 3.5e weapon entry.

What Changes Between Editions?

  • 2024 and 2014: the base shotgun exists, while the twin-barrel simultaneous-fire rule is the campaign conversion.
  • PF1e: supplies the original two-barrel and double-shot mechanics, including scatter ammunition.
  • 3.5e: converts those ideas onto the DMG modern shotgun profile.
