Liveoak

Liveoak awakens one healthy, Huge oak into a treant-like guardian. It is a spell of place and preparation: the caster chooses a protective command and leaves a tree to watch over a home, sacred grove or valued passage. Pathfinder and D&D 3.5e preserve separate versions; the legacy Witch archive lists it at 7th level.

Spell Rules by Edition

Liveoak — 5.5e / 2024

Status: the named spell is absent from SRD 5.2.1. Spells such as Awaken have different mechanics, restrictions and levels; do not treat them as this spell’s conversion.

Liveoak — 5e / 2014

Status: no spell named Liveoak in the 2014 core list. Use its own tree- or plant-based magic without importing d20 treant-statistics or one-tree restriction automatically.

A triggering phrase of no more than one word per caster level causes the chosen oak to animate as a Treant under Pathfinder rules. Only one oak can be affected by the caster’s Liveoak spell at a time. If it is dispelled, the tree immediately takes root where it stands; if dismissed by the caster, it attempts to return to its original place before rooting.

Edition distinction: the Pathfinder Core Rulebook text does not include the 3.5e restriction tying the oak to a dwelling, sacred site or nearby object. Do not automatically import that older condition.

Casting Time10 minutes

Duration1 day/level (D)
Saving ThrowNone
Spell ResistanceNo

The original legacy spell turns one healthy, Huge oak into a Treant guardian when its command phrase is spoken. The tree must stand within 10 feet of the caster’s dwelling, within a place sacred to the caster, or within 300 feet of an object or place the caster wants guarded. Only one oak can be affected at a time.

The trigger phrase may contain at most one word per caster level. Dispelling immediately roots the tree wherever it stands. If the caster dismisses the spell, the oak first attempts to return to its former location.

What Changed?

The numbered druid spell is retained in both d20 editions, but the 3.5e distance-to-home or sacred-site condition should not be automatically used in Pathfinder. Fifth-edition spells such as Awaken have different effects and cannot substitute as direct Liveoak mechanics.

Using Liveoak in Play

This spell rewards advance planning. An oak outside a coven house may be a silent sentry; one near a woodland shrine might spring to life if trespassers pass a boundary. The caster must choose a clear command phrase and consider whether the guardian can actually reach those it is meant to stop.

Counterplay and GM Rulings

  • Tree eligibility: the source requires a healthy, Huge oak; not every tree in the forest qualifies.
  • One-tree limit: no second Liveoak can be cast while the first remains active.
  • Dispel Magic: an ending of the effect roots the tree instantly wherever it stands. A voluntary dismissal allows it to attempt to return first.
  • Counterspell: an opponent with the ability to interrupt spellcasting can stop the ten-minute ritual under the selected edition’s counterspell rules.
  • Statistics: use the Treant statistics of the edition being played, not a blended or modernized creature block.

Mythical Context

In Greek stories, dryads and hamadryads embody the bond between a spirit and its tree; in some accounts, the spirit’s life ends when its tree dies. That gives an awakened oak guardian a deeper stake than an obedient wooden monster: defending the grove can mean defending a life. See Encyclopaedia Britannica’s account of the dryads.

Historical Context

Pliny the Elder described the oak groves and mistletoe rites associated with Gaulish druids in the first century CE. His Roman account is valuable testimony, but it should not be mistaken for a complete description written by druids themselves. A living oak guarding an old meeting place provides a grounded historical parallel; see Pliny, Natural History, Book XVI, chapter 95.

Rules Sources and Licensing

The 3.5e SRD and Pathfinder 1e open rule versions of Liveoak are preserved under the Open Game License v1.0a. The original public-domain tree artwork by Carl Gustav Carus is retained, and the modern-edition status panels do not invent conversions.
