Dominate Monster

Sovereign Compulsion

Dominate Monster does not merely frighten, persuade or bewilder a creature. It establishes magical authority over another mind, turning one of the most dangerous beings on the battlefield into a temporary instrument of the caster’s will.

The name survives across editions, but the spell does not work identically in each rules system. Under the current 2024 rules it is an 8th-level concentration spell built around the Charmed condition and repeated Wisdom saves after damage. Pathfinder 1e and D&D 3.5e instead preserve the older, longer-lasting model of telepathic domination inherited from Dominate Person.

Quick Rules Reference

D&D 5.5e / 2024

8th-level control

One visible creature within 60 feet makes a Wisdom save. Failure imposes Charmed while you concentrate, up to 1 hour. Damage gives the target another save.

Pathfinder 1e

Long-term domination

One creature at close range; Will negates and spell resistance applies. Duration is 1 day per level and the spell inherits the full Dominate Person procedure.

D&D 3.5e

Creature restriction removed

Sorcerer/Wizard 9. It functions as Dominate Person except that the humanoid-only targeting restriction is removed.

Effect

Choose one creature you can see within range. The creature makes a Wisdom saving throw. On a failure, it has the Charmed condition for the spell’s duration.

If you or your allies are already fighting the target when the spell is cast, it makes that initial saving throw with Advantage.

While the creature remains Charmed by this spell and you are both on the same plane of existence, you share a telepathic link.

On your turn you can issue commands through that link without spending an action. You might direct the creature to attack a particular enemy, move to a location, retrieve something, guard a position, or perform another task within its capabilities.

If the target completes an instruction and receives no further command, it chooses its own movement and actions while concentrating on its own protection.

You can also direct the dominated creature to take a Reaction. Doing so requires you to spend your own Reaction.

Breaking the domination

Whenever the target takes damage, it immediately makes another Wisdom saving throw against the spell. A success ends Dominate Monster on that creature.

The spell also ends if your Concentration ends.

Important 2024 boundary

This is not the older version that allows the caster to spend an action taking complete moment-by-moment control over every action the creature performs. Use the current command structure when playing with the 2024 rules.

Using a 9th-level spell slot

When cast with a level 9 spell slot, your Concentration can last for as long as 8 hours instead of 1 hour.

Creature type and immunity

The spell targets a creature rather than a particular creature type. It is therefore not restricted to Humanoids, Beasts or Monstrosities.

However, the effect works by imposing the Charmed condition. A creature immune to Charmed cannot be brought under this spell’s control.

Mind Blank

Under the 2024 rules, Mind Blank protects its subject against magical control of the mind and against the Charmed condition. A protected creature therefore cannot be dominated in this way while the protection remains.

Counterspell

Dominate Monster has Verbal and Somatic components. A creature able to see the casting and meet the other requirements of Counterspell can attempt to interrupt the spell before domination is established.

Dispel Magic

Once Dominate Monster is active, it is an ongoing spell and can be attacked by Dispel Magic.

Effect

Pathfinder’s Dominate Monster functions as Dominate Person but removes the humanoid-only targeting restriction.

If the creature fails its initial Will save and its spell resistance does not stop the spell, you establish telepathic domination.

With a shared language, detailed instructions can be communicated. Without one, communication is limited to simple commands.

Continuing orders

Once commanded, the creature continues trying to carry out the instruction, aside from actions required for ordinary survival.

Changing instructions or issuing a new order is a move action.

Reading the creature’s experience

By concentrating fully as a standard action, the caster can receive sensory information as interpreted by the dominated creature.

Orders against the creature’s nature

A creature ordered to do something strongly contrary to its nature receives another saving throw with a +2 bonus.

Obviously self-destructive commands are not obeyed.

Distance after control is established

Once domination has been established, control can be exercised at any distance provided caster and subject remain on the same plane.

Daily concentration

If the caster fails to spend at least 1 round concentrating on the spell during a day, the creature receives another saving throw to break the domination.

Protection from Evil

In Pathfinder 1e, Protection from Evil and similar protections can suppress the caster’s ability to exercise mental control while the protection applies.

Dispel Magic

Pathfinder’s targeted Dispel Magic can attempt to end the ongoing domination using the Pathfinder caster-level-based dispel procedure.

Pathfinder edition lock

Do not import the 2024 one-hour Concentration duration, damage-triggered Wisdom saves or Reaction procedure into Pathfinder.

D&D 3.5e

V, S
Casting Time
1 round
Range
Close (25 ft. + 5 ft./2 levels)
Target
One creature
Duration
1 day/level
Save / Resistance
Will negates / Spell Resistance yes

Effect

In D&D 3.5e, Dominate Monster uses the rules of Dominate Person but removes the restriction to humanoid targets.

A creature still needs to be susceptible to the spell’s mind-affecting compulsion.

Orders and activity

A dominated subject continues following an existing command until the task is complete or its instructions change, while still attending to basic survival.

Redirecting the creature with new instructions requires a move action.

Sensory awareness

The caster can spend a standard action concentrating on the connection to receive sensory impressions interpreted through the creature’s mind.

Resistance to unnatural commands

When forced toward an action strongly opposed to its nature, the creature gains another saving throw with a +2 bonus.

Clearly self-destructive orders are not carried out.

Control across distance

After domination is established, control does not depend on the original close range.

The telepathic control can continue across any distance while both creatures remain on the same plane.

Maintaining domination

If the caster does not devote at least 1 round each day to concentrating on the spell, the dominated creature receives another saving throw to escape.

Protection from Evil

The 3.5e Protection from Evil rules can suppress the exercise of mental control and the telepathic link while the ward operates.

Dispel Magic

D&D 3.5e Dispel Magic can target the ongoing domination using the 3.5e dispel-check procedure.

Legacy material preserved

The original SpiralWorlds entry’s “Sorcerer/Wizard 9” rules were valid D&D 3.5e mechanics and belong here, not at the top of a multi-edition page.

Rules Interactions and Exceptions

Charmed immunity

In 2024 play, immunity to the Charmed condition is a direct defence against Dominate Monster.

Damage is dangerous to control

In 2024, every instance of damage creates another opportunity for the target to escape.

Legendary defences

Powerful creatures often possess unusually strong saving throws or specific defensive abilities. Always read the individual creature’s stat block.

Domination is not possession

The caster directs another mind; the caster does not move their own consciousness into the target’s body.

Universal rule

Identify the edition before resolving the spell. Its title has remained stable while its duration, action economy, saving-throw procedure and control model have changed.

Best Uses and Tactics

Turn the encounter’s strongest asset

The most dramatic use is often the most effective: take the creature doing the most work for the enemy and redirect that power.

A dominated brute can block a passage, attack its former allies, carry an objective, or prevent other enemies from reaching the caster.

Control before dealing damage

In 2024 play, attacking the dominated target can be self-defeating because every instance of damage creates another saving throw.

Exploit action economy

Turning a major creature from enemy to temporary ally changes two sides of the action economy at once: your opponents lose its actions while your side gains its cooperation.

Use terrain rather than suicidal commands

Commands to block a door, carry the caster away from danger, restrain an ally, abandon a defensive position, or move into an inconvenient part of the battlefield can be decisive without asking the creature to destroy itself.

Protect Concentration in 2024

Once Dominate Monster succeeds, positioning, cover and protection for the caster may matter more than dealing additional damage personally.

The 9th-level slot is primarily about time

The 2024 upcast extends the maximum Concentration duration to eight hours, transforming the spell from a single-encounter tool into a potentially significant strategic-control effect.

DM Notes

Dominate Monster is most interesting when control feels powerful without erasing the identity of the creature being controlled.

The monster still knows what it is, retains its abilities, and carries out commands using its own capabilities. The spell establishes authority; it does not transform the target into a different being.

For the 2024 version, keep command wording meaningful without turning every instruction into a legal puzzle. Where a command leaves choices open, the target makes those choices itself.

Older-edition domination deserves a different atmosphere. Its day-per-level duration and same-plane reach make it suitable for conspiracies, captured monsters, corrupted guardians and long-running manipulation.

Avoid edition drift

Do not combine the most favourable pieces of every version. A 2024 caster does not receive Pathfinder’s day-per-level duration, and a Pathfinder caster does not use the 2024 damage-triggered Wisdom-save procedure.

Why This Spell Is Dangerous in the World

Dominate Monster changes the political meaning of powerful creatures. A dragon, outsider, giant, aberration or other formidable being is not merely a battlefield threat if sufficiently powerful enchantment can redirect its will.

Rulers who employ monstrous guardians therefore need protection against enchantment as much as they need walls. Summoners must consider whether the entity they call can be stolen from them mentally.

In older editions, where domination can persist for days per caster level, one successful working can create a hidden agent whose obedience lasts far beyond the encounter in which the spell was cast.

The monster remains powerful. The terrifying change is that its power now answers to someone else.

Historical and Occult Development

Dominate Monster is a modern tabletop-game spell rather than a direct reconstruction of any single historical rite. Its broader idea—the magical binding of another being’s choices or actions—has much older parallels.

Binding magic

Ancient Mediterranean magical practice included binding traditions in which written formulas, ritual objects or curse tablets were intended to constrain an opponent, rival or desired person.

These practices varied enormously and should not be reduced to a literal historical version of the game spell. The useful comparison is the recurring idea that ritual power can restrict another being’s freedom to act.

One Roman-period object in the British Museum combines a wax figure, human hair and a papyrus roll.

From restraint to fantasy control

Modern fantasy turns binding, enchantment, irresistible speech, coercive song, magical oaths and supernatural obedience into explicit game mechanics.

Dominate Monster represents the extreme end of that abstraction: not persuasion, but direct magical command.

Mythological Parallels

The Sirens and compelled action

In the Odyssey, the Sirens’ song exerts an attraction so overwhelming that Odysseus has himself bound to the mast while his companions block their hearing.

The episode is not equivalent to Dominate Monster, but it provides an important mythic image of supernatural influence overwhelming ordinary judgement.

Circe and magical mastery

Circe’s stories associate sorcery with the ability to transform, constrain and overpower those who enter her domain.

Circe in Greek and Roman literary tradition

The recurring pattern

The common thread is loss of ordinary agency. Myth expresses it through songs, potions, divine commands, transformations and bindings; roleplaying games compress the same dramatic fear into saving throws, conditions and explicit control rules.

  • Dominate Person — the narrower domination spell from which Pathfinder 1e and D&D 3.5e inherit much of their control procedure.
  • Counterspell — can interrupt the spell before it resolves when the edition-specific requirements are met.
  • Dispel Magic — attacks an already active Dominate Monster effect.
  • Protection from Evil — an important older-edition defence against the exercise of magical mental control.
