Benefit: You get a +4 bonus on Concentration checks made to cast a spell or use a spell-like ability while on the defensive or while you are grappling or pinned.

When Combat Casting Applies

Combat Casting is a specialised Concentration feat. Its +4 bonus applies when casting defensively and when trying to cast or use a spell-like ability while grappling or pinned. It is not a general +4 bonus on every Concentration check.

Combat Casting Example

A spellcaster threatened by an enemy chooses to cast defensively. The caster makes the required Concentration check and adds the +4 bonus from Combat Casting. Later, if the same character makes a Concentration check for a circumstance outside the feat’s listed situations, Combat Casting provides no bonus.

Who Benefits Most

  • Spellcasters who expect to cast while enemies are close enough to threaten them.
  • Characters whose magic or spell-like abilities must remain usable during grapples.
  • Front-line or battle-oriented casters who face Concentration checks more often than protected back-line casters.

See the Feats index for other spellcasting and defensive options.
