feat Cleave

Cleave (General)

This material is Open Game Content, and is licensed for public use under the terms of the Open Game License v1.0a.

Prerequisites: Strengh 13, Power Attack.

Benefit: If you deal a creature enough damage to make it drop (typically by dropping it to below 0 hit points or killing it), you get an immediate, extra melee attack
against another creature within reach. You cannot take a 5-foot step before making this extra attack. The extra attack is with the same weapon and at the same bonus as the attack that dropped the previous creature. You can use this ability once per round.

Special: A fighter may select Cleave as one of his fighter bonus feats.

How Cleave Works

Cleave rewards a melee character for dropping an opponent. When an attack deals enough damage to make a creature drop, the character immediately gains one extra melee attack against another creature within reach. The extra attack uses the same weapon and the same attack bonus as the attack that dropped the first target.

Cleave Example

A fighter drops a goblin with a sword attack while another goblin is already within reach. Cleave grants an immediate sword attack against the second goblin. The fighter cannot take a 5-foot step to reach a more distant target before making the Cleave attack.

Limits and Feat Chain

  • Cleave can be used only once per round.
  • The next target must already be within reach when the extra attack is made.
  • The feat requires Strength 13 and Power Attack.
  • Great Cleave removes the once-per-round limit when its own prerequisites are met.

See the Feats index for more melee and fighter options.
