Feats
5.5e feat categories · Pathfinder 1e feat progression · D&D 3.5e feat progression
Feats represent specialised training, talents and capabilities that sit alongside your class features. The three supported rules systems award feats at different times and use different categories. First identify why your character is receiving a feat, then choose only from options legal for that edition and source.

D&D 5.5e / 2024
2024 feats are divided into Origin, General, Fighting Style and Epic Boon categories.
Background. Your background grants an Origin feat.
Human. The 2024 Human’s Versatile trait grants an additional Origin feat of your choice.
Class features. Some classes grant feats from a restricted category. A level-1 Fighter gains a Fighting Style feat; Paladins and Rangers gain their Fighting Style feature at level 2.
General feats. At levels where your class grants Ability Score Improvement, take the Ability Score Improvement feat or another feat for which you qualify, as the class feature specifies.
Epic Boons. Core classes grant an Epic Boon feature at level 19.
Prerequisites. A feat can normally be taken only once unless marked repeatable, and prerequisites must be met unless a feature says otherwise.
Level-1 Basic Rules feat reference
| Category | Feat | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Origin | Alert | Improves Initiative and lets you exchange your Initiative result with a willing ally after rolling. |
| Origin | Magic Initiate | Grants a small package of cantrips and a level-1 spell from the chosen eligible spell list. |
| Origin | Savage Attacker | Once per turn on a weapon hit, roll the weapon’s damage dice twice and use either result. |
| Origin | Skilled | Gain proficiency in three skills or tools in any combination. |
| Fighting Style | Archery | Gain +2 to attack rolls with Ranged weapons. |
| Fighting Style | Defense | Gain +1 Armor Class while wearing Light, Medium or Heavy armor. |
| Fighting Style | Great Weapon Fighting | With an eligible two-handed or versatile melee weapon, low weapon-damage die results are raised to a minimum of 3. |
| Fighting Style | Two-Weapon Fighting | Add your ability modifier to the extra attack made through the Light weapon property when it is not already added. |
At level 1, use only a feat your background, species or class actually grants. Later General feats and Epic Boons become relevant when a class feature or level grants access.
Pathfinder 1e
General progression. Gain a feat at 1st level and every odd-numbered character level thereafter.
Human. A standard PF1e Human gains an additional feat at 1st level.
Fighter. A PF1e Fighter gains a bonus combat feat at 1st level and every even Fighter level thereafter.
Prerequisites. These can include ability scores, other feats, skill ranks, base attack bonus, class features or other qualities. A character can select a feat at the same level the prerequisite is gained.
For a first character, prefer feats that improve actions you already understand rather than committing to a long feat chain immediately.
D&D 3.5e
General progression. Gain a feat at 1st level and again at total character levels 3rd, 6th, 9th, 12th, 15th and 18th.
Human. A standard 3.5e Human gains an extra feat at 1st level.
Fighter. A 3.5e Fighter gains a bonus combat-oriented feat at 1st level and additional Fighter bonus feats at 2nd level and every two Fighter levels thereafter.
Character level. General advancement feats use total character level, not one class level.

SpiralWorlds feat library
Use the index as a reference, not a universal menu
The existing Feats index contains a large mixed legacy library. Many entries use PF1e or 3.5e terminology such as base attack bonus, skill ranks, Fighter bonus feats, item creation feats and metamagic feats.
PF1e and 3.5e players should also verify the exact edition of each individual feat page.
Before moving on
Feat checklist
- The campaign edition is fixed.
- Every feat has a rule that grants it.
- 5.5e feat categories are not mixed.
- The background’s 5.5e Origin feat is recorded.
- A 5.5e Human’s extra Origin feat is recorded only for a Human.
- Fighting Style feats are taken only when a feature grants access.
- PF1e general feats follow the odd-level progression.
- 3.5e general feats follow the every-third-level progression after 1st.
- Human and Fighter bonus feats use the correct edition.
- All prerequisites are met.
- Legacy feat pages have been checked for edition before use.
