Illusory Script, “Veiled Script”

Illusory Script 2
Created with Chat Gpt

Not all magic hides things from sight—some hides them in plain view.

Illusory Script allows a caster to encode meaning itself, placing truth and falsehood side by side on the same page. To most readers, the text appears harmless, mundane, or misleading. To those chosen by the caster, the illusion falls away, revealing the intended message in full clarity.

This is not concealment—it is selective reality, a spell of spies, scholars, priests, conspirators, and rulers. It transforms writing into a controlled gate of understanding, where knowledge is not merely hidden, but withheld by design.

Illusory Script 1
Created with Chat Gpt

A harmless-looking text conceals its true meaning, revealing its message only to those meant to understand it.

1st-Level Illusion (Ritual)
Casting Time: 1 Minute
Range: Touch
Components: S, M (a lead-based ink worth 10 GP, which the spell consumes)
Duration: 10 Days

Available To: Bard, Warlock, Wizard

Effect

You write on parchment, paper, or another suitable writing surface and cloak the writing with illusion for the duration.

To you and any creatures you designate when you cast the spell, the writing appears as its true message.

To all other creatures, the text appears as something entirely different of your choosing, such as a harmless note, a pious passage, a ledger entry, or other plausible writing.

A creature that studies the text can make an Intelligence (Investigation) check against your spell save DC to recognize that it is illusory, though this does not by itself reveal the hidden message.

Overview

Illusory Script is a spell of controlled understanding. It does not remove writing or make it invisible—it replaces what that writing means depending on who reads it.

This makes it exceptionally powerful in intrigue-driven play. Messages can pass through hostile hands without discovery. Dangerous knowledge can sit openly on a shelf. Instructions can be hidden inside ordinary documents. The spell creates situations where different characters act on different truths—often without realizing it.

Uses

Secret Correspondence

Hide instructions, warnings, passwords, or intelligence within seemingly harmless documents.

Concealed Lore

Store forbidden rituals, maps, or knowledge in texts that appear irrelevant or mundane.

Political and Religious Intrigue

Mask meaning within decrees, sermons, contracts, confessions, or diplomatic messages.

Misdirection

Allow enemies to read false information while allies receive the truth from the same page.

Tactics

This spell is strongest when it shapes events before anyone realizes magic is involved.

Use it to seed false certainty, create delayed consequences, or let enemies act confidently on incorrect information. The best use of Illusory Script is not just hiding truth—but controlling belief.

Good Combinations

Magic Mouth – A hidden text paired with a triggered spoken warning or revelation.
Glyph of Warding – Protect concealed knowledge with magical consequences.
Arcane Lock – Hide instructions to open something that others cannot interpret.
Forgery – Combine physical authenticity with magical deception.
Detect Magic – Reveals illusion, but not the intended truth.

DM Notes

This spell is a narrative tool as much as a mechanical one.

The tension comes from who believes what they are reading, and when that belief is proven wrong. It works best in campaigns involving intrigue, secrecy, hidden factions, and delayed revelation.

Reward clever use. The spell becomes memorable when it changes decisions, not just documents.

Range Touch
Target One touched object weighing no more than 10 lb.
Duration One day/level (D)

Spell Resistance Yes

The illusory script appears to be some form of foreign or magical writing. Only the person (or people) designated by you at the time of the casting are able to read the writing; it’s unintelligible to any other character, although an illusionist recognizes it as illusory script.

Any unauthorized creature attempting to read the script triggers a potent illusory effect and must make a saving throw. A successful saving throw means the creature can look away with only a mild sense of disorientation. Failure means the creature is subject to a suggestion implanted in the script by you at the time the illusory script spell was cast. The suggestion lasts only 30 minutes. Typical suggestions include “Close the book and leave,” “Forget the existence of the book,” and so forth. If successfully dispelled by dispel magic, the illusory script and its secret message disappear. The hidden message can be read by a combination of the true seeing spell with the read magic or comprehend languages spell.

The casting time depends on how long a message you wish to write, but it is always at least 1 minute.

Material Component A lead-based ink (cost of not less than 50 gp).
