Invisible Stalker

Invisible Stalker
My Images (midjourney.com)

The Invisible Stalker is an enigmatic and terrifying entity, often summoned by powerful magic users to serve as an assassin or tracker. Despite its name, the Invisible Stalker isn’t completely formless. It appears as a faint distortion in the air, like a ripple in water or a heat haze, occasionally hinting at its humanoid shape. This nearly imperceptible form makes it nearly impossible to detect, even in close quarters.

In terms of behavior, the Invisible Stalker is relentless and single-minded, following orders to the letter without deviation or mercy. It is an expert in stealth, using its invisibility to approach its targets silently and strike with precision, often before they even realize it’s there. Once it locks onto a quarry, it pursues them with an unyielding determination, never stopping until its task is complete.

The habitat of an Invisible Stalker is the Elemental Plane of Air, where it exists as a free-roaming creature of the wind. However, on the Material Plane, it operates in any environment, adapting seamlessly to urban settings, dense forests, or even the open seas.

Its modus operandi involves stalking its target for days or even weeks, learning their routines and waiting for the perfect moment to strike. It favors ambush tactics, using its invisibility to get the drop on its prey, attacking swiftly and disappearing again before the target can react.

The motivation of an Invisible Stalker is tied to the commands of its summoner. It has no personal desires or emotions, acting purely on the orders given to it. However, once its task is complete, it often seeks to return to its home plane, showing no interest in the affairs of the mortal world beyond fulfilling its mission.

Traits

  • Invisibility: The Invisible Stalker is invisible.
  • Faultless Tracker: The Invisible Stalker is given a quarry by its summoner. It knows the direction and distance to its quarry as long as they are on the same plane of existence. The Stalker can track its quarry across any distance and through any terrain, never losing its trail unless the target moves to another plane.

Actions

  • Multiattack: The Invisible Stalker makes two slam attacks.
  • Slam: Melee Weapon Attack: +8 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 10 (2d6 + 3) bludgeoning damage.

Tactics

  • Ambush Predator: The Invisible Stalker excels at surprise attacks, using its invisibility to stalk its prey undetected. It will often wait in ambush, studying its target before striking with a well-timed, precise attack.
  • Hit-and-Run: The Stalker uses its speed and flight to its advantage, striking quickly before retreating into the shadows. It will often attack and then reposition itself to confuse its target and avoid counterattacks.
  • Relentless Pursuer: The Stalker will pursue its target relentlessly, using its superior mobility to track and harry its prey. If its quarry attempts to flee, the Stalker will chase them down, wearing them out over time with relentless attacks.

Unique Actions

  • Wind Assault (Recharge 5–6): The Invisible Stalker can create a sudden, violent burst of wind. Each creature within a 15-foot cone must make a DC 15 Dexterity saving throw. On a failed save, a creature takes 14 (4d6) bludgeoning damage and is pushed 10 feet away from the Stalker. On a successful save, the creature takes half damage and is not pushed.
  • Vanishing Strike: When the Invisible Stalker hits a creature with a slam attack, it can immediately turn invisible again (no action required). This ability allows it to maintain its stealth and continue its hit-and-run tactics effectively.

Description:
The Invisible Stalker is a creature of pure elemental air, summoned to the Material Plane to serve as a hunter, assassin, or scout. It is an embodiment of the wind—silent, swift, and unseen. When given a quarry, it becomes an implacable force, pursuing its target across any distance with unerring accuracy. It strikes from the shadows, its presence only betrayed by the faintest disturbance in the air. Relentless and tireless, the Invisible Stalker is a deadly foe that few can escape.

No true form can be detected, yet a sense of force and hulking malevolence is undeniable in this creature’s presence.

Very little is known about these enigmatic and mysterious creatures, as their very nature makes details of their true form difficult to discern. Brought to this world from the Plane of Air, these creatures fulfill tasks for those who conjure them. Invisible stalkers act as guardians, assassins, and trackers, occupations in which they excel. Their natural invisibility and skill at stealth allow them to follow their quarry without detection and give them the upper hand when it comes to exterminating a mark.

Many invisible stalkers resent this and see these petty tasks as nothing more than chores dictated by mortals. When given a particularly complex or bothersome task, an invisible stalker seeks to find a loophole in a poorly worded instruction. For instance, wizards calling an invisible stalker into service with the instructions ‘protect me from danger’ might find themselves escorted to a faraway hidden location, or even brought to the Plane of Air.

Due to their constant summoning, many invisible stalkers harbor hostility for those dwelling on the Material Plane. Those invisible stalkers new to the mortal world only know the stories of their kind and tend to keep an open mind about the intentions of those who call them. Over time, or in the service of a particularly vile master, invisible stalkers form negative opinions of these creatures of flesh and bone, leading to their tendency to pervert their instructions and cause harm to their masters. For older and more experienced invisible stalkers, the only thing protecting those who summon them is the magic that binds them. These creatures automatically try to use inconsistencies in the wording of their tasks and literal twists on the intention to find a way to inconvenience, injure, or even kill the priest or arcanist that brought them to the plane.

Natural Invisibility (Ex)

This ability is constant – an invisible stalker remains invisible at all times, even when attacking. As this ability is inherent, it is not subject to the invisibility purge spell. Against foes that cannot pinpoint it, the invisible stalker gains a +20 bonus on Stealth checks when moving, or +40 when standing still -these bonuses are not included in the statistics above.

FAQ/Errata

Does invisibility purge work on creatures that are naturally invisible?

In general, yes–nothing in the spell description says it only works on spells or other magical sources of invisibility. However, note that the invisible stalker’s natural invisibility specifically says that it is not subject to invisibility purge. Thus, will-o’-wisps and pixies become visible, but invisible stalkers do not.
