Shield of Arrow Deflection

Warrior with shield, illustrating a Shield of Arrow Deflection

An arrow-deflection shield can turn aside a ranged weapon that would otherwise strike its wielder. The named property belongs to Pathfinder 1E and D&D 3.5e; 5e does not use the same Reflex-save property as a core SRD item ability.

5.5e / 2024

No direct core SRD property under this name. A 2024 conversion should use 2024 reaction, attack-roll and item wording. Do not import a DC 20 Reflex save or enhancement-bonus scaling into the 2024 rules.

5e / 2014

No direct core SRD property under this name. Build any conversion as a specific shield and state exactly when it can respond to a ranged attack. Do not treat the legacy Reflex-save mechanic as a 5e rule.

Pathfinder 1E

Price: +2 bonus · Aura: faint abjuration · CL: 5th.

Once per round, when a ranged weapon would normally hit the wielder, the wielder may attempt a DC 20 Reflex save to deflect it. Increase the DC by the ranged weapon’s enhancement bonus. The wielder must be aware of the attack and not flat-footed. The deflection attempt does not use an action. Exceptional ranged attacks that the property excludes are not deflected.

Construction: Craft Magic Arms and Armor, shield.

D&D 3.5e

Price: +2 bonus · Aura: faint abjuration · CL: 5th.

The 3.5e property follows the same central procedure: once per round after a ranged weapon would hit, the wielder may make the specified Reflex save to deflect it, provided they are aware of the attack and not flat-footed. Apply the 3.5e property’s own exclusions and enhancement adjustment.

Construction: Craft Magic Arms and Armor, shield.
