The Andabatae were criminals who had been sentenced to die ad gladium (fighting in the sand). Their helmets lacked slots to see, so they fought blindly. They usually did not wear a shield, although they used a sword. Their opponents were of the same condition, since for the professional gladiators it was dishonorable to fight with them, since they had not received any type of training.
