The population is strongly religous, and its governance is dominated by a small group of leaders who were strongly influenced by church leaders. Its governors are elected, but the electorate is limited to freemen who had been examined for their religious views and formally admitted to the local church. As a consequence, the colonial leadership exhibits intolerance to other religious views. The colonists initially had decent relationships with the local Indian populations, but frictions arose over cultural differences which are further exacerbated by Dutch colonial expansion.

The colony is economically successful, engaging in trade with England and the West Indies.
