Celestial Dog: Guardian of the Starlit Realms

Celestial Dog 1
Create

The Celestial Dog is a radiant and awe-inspiring creature, exuding a divine presence. Its coat shimmers with every metallic hue imaginable, ranging from gleaming gold to lustrous silver, with intricate patterns resembling celestial constellations subtly visible under bright light. Their eyes glow with an ethereal light, often matching the color of their coats, and seem to pierce into the soul. Standing slightly larger than an average dog, their musculature is perfectly proportioned, giving them an air of both grace and strength. Their tails flow like banners in the wind, and even their pawsteps leave behind faint, shimmering marks on the ground that fade after a few moments.

Behavior

Celestial Dogs are intelligent and noble creatures, driven by an unshakable sense of duty to protect and serve the cause of good. They are deeply loyal, forming unbreakable bonds with allies who share their moral convictions. Though they can be playful and gentle with those they trust, they are unwaveringly vigilant, always on alert for the presence of evil. Despite their capacity for fierce combat, they avoid unnecessary violence, showing mercy whenever possible. Their howls are both haunting and uplifting, often used to signal danger or rally allies in battle.

Habitat

Native to good-aligned planes such as Elysium or Mount Celestia, Celestial Dogs roam vast, idyllic landscapes bathed in perpetual twilight or golden light. These planes are often filled with crystalline rivers, rolling meadows, and towering, luminescent trees. Celestial Dogs thrive in such serene environments, though they are often found traveling to other planes to aid in battles against darkness. On rare occasions, they may temporarily manifest on the Material Plane through summoning spells, where they act as stalwart protectors for their summoners.

Modus Operandi

Celestial Dogs are relentless hunters of evil, using their keen sense of smell and heightened perception to track down fiends and other malevolent creatures. They prefer to work in packs, coordinating attacks with near-perfect precision. A typical strategy involves isolating their prey, striking swiftly with a combination of agility and their divine bite, and using their Smite Evil ability to deliver devastating blows to dark-hearted foes. When tracking, they use their supernatural senses to detect trails invisible to mortals, making them nearly impossible to evade. They are also adept at protecting allies, using their resistance to elements and spell resistance to shield others from harm.

Motivation

The primary drive of a Celestial Dog is the eradication of evil and the protection of the innocent. Their actions are guided by an innate connection to celestial forces, compelling them to maintain the balance of good in the multiverse. While they do not act out of a desire for personal glory, they take pride in their role as guardians and enforcers of justice. Their loyalty to good-aligned deities and celestial beings is absolute, and they will willingly face overwhelming odds if it means saving others from harm. Whether guarding a sacred relic, guiding a lost soul, or confronting a demon, the Celestial Dog is a steadfast beacon of hope and righteousness.

Traits

Celestial Resistance. The Celestial Dog has resistance to acid, cold, and lightning damage.

Divine Smite (Recharge 5-6). Once per day, as a bonus action, the Celestial Dog can charge its next attack with divine energy, causing it to deal an additional 2d8 radiant damage on a hit against an evil-aligned creature.

Ethereal Step. Once per day, the Celestial Dog can use its action to become ethereal for 1 minute, allowing it to pass through objects and creatures, and to ignore difficult terrain. It can use its Ethereal Step as a reaction if it is about to be hit by an attack, phasing out of existence to avoid damage.

Magic Resistance. The Celestial Dog has advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects.

Scent. The Celestial Dog can detect the presence of creatures within 30 feet of it that are not behind total cover, as long as they are within line of sight. The dog can also track creatures by scent with a Wisdom (Survival) check contested by the creature’s Stealth check.

Keen Hearing and Smell. The Celestial Dog has advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on hearing or smell.

Actions

Multiattack. The Celestial Dog makes two Bite attacks.

Bite.
Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target.
Hit: 7 (1d6 + 3) piercing damage plus 4 (1d8) radiant damage if the target is evil-aligned.

Celestial Howl (Recharge 5-6). The Celestial Dog lets out a haunting howl that echoes with divine power. Each creature within 30 feet that can hear the howl must succeed on a DC 14 Wisdom saving throw or become frightened for 1 minute. A creature can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success.

Divine Smite (Recharge 5-6). The Celestial Dog’s bite becomes suffused with radiant energy. When it hits an evil creature with its bite attack, it deals an additional 2d8 radiant damage.

Reactions

Divine Intervention (1/Day). When a creature the Celestial Dog can see hits a creature that is good-aligned within 30 feet of it, the Celestial Dog can use its reaction to impose disadvantage on the attack roll. The attacker must then make a DC 15 Charisma saving throw. On a failed save, the attack misses, and the attacker is stunned until the end of their next turn.

Tactics

The Celestial Dog fights with noble purpose and precision. It will prioritize attacking evil-aligned foes, using its Divine Smite ability to deal heavy damage to any fiends, undead, or other dark creatures. When engaged in combat, it maintains a close distance to its allies, serving as both a protector and a front-line attacker.

  • Divine Smite: Always use its Divine Smite ability against evil-aligned creatures to maximize damage and keep the battle in its favor.
  • Celestial Howl: If surrounded by multiple foes or if the battle seems to be going awry, the Celestial Howl can serve as a powerful tool to disable opponents and give it the advantage. It can even use it tactically to force enemies to scatter.
  • Ethereal Step: The Ethereal Step is not just a defensive tool, but a method of positioning the Celestial Dog to better control the flow of battle. If enemies are heavily concentrated in one area, it can phase through them to escape, regroup, or position for a more advantageous strike.
  • Divine Intervention: It will use Divine Intervention to protect good-aligned allies, especially against evil creatures who threaten them.

Environment and Motivation

The Celestial Dog is found in planes of good alignment, often as a guardian of sacred places or a divine protector of those who serve the greater good. It is drawn to conflict between good and evil, intervening to ensure the balance is maintained, seeking out and hunting fiends or corrupt creatures. It has a deep connection to the divine, and its motivations are aligned with a divine sense of justice, serving as both a protector and a herald of purity.

Celestial Dog

A majestic animal, the Celestial Dog can normally be found roaming good aligned planes either individually or in small packs.
