Dinosaur, Allosaurus

Allosaurus strides through the sun-drenched floodplains like a living blade—sleek, fast, and deadly. It stands over 28 feet long, with a massive head perched atop a strong, flexible neck. Its jaws bristle with serrated teeth, perfect for slicing into flesh, while its muscular arms end in three-fingered hands tipped with long, curved claws. Two ridges rise just above its eyes, giving its skull a menacing glare and possibly shielding its vision during hunts or in combat.

An aggressive, opportunistic predator. It patrols the open woodlands and fern-rich valleys, often shadowing herds of sauropods or stalking solitary stegosaurs. Unlike some larger theropods, it doesn’t rely on brute strength alone—instead, it strikes with speed and precision, using its jaws to inflict deep wounds and then retreating, letting its prey weaken before moving in for the kill.

Its hunting strategy—its modus operandi—is to wear down larger dinosaurs with repeated ambushes or coordinated attacks if others of its kind are nearby. Some paleontologists believe it may hunt in loose groups, not quite a pack, but cooperative enough to take down massive prey that no single hunter could manage alone.

Motivated by hunger, dominance, and instinct, Allosaurus defends its territory fiercely and tolerates no competition. Every move it makes is calculated for survival—every roar, every chase, every bone-crushing bite a step in its constant pursuit of control over the Jurassic wilds.

Traits

Keen Senses.
The Allosaurus has advantage on Wisdom (Perception) and Wisdom (Survival) checks that rely on smell or tracking.

Pack Opportunist.
If a creature is within 5 feet of one of the Allosaurus’s allies (including another Allosaurus), the Allosaurus has advantage on melee attack rolls against that creature.

Momentum Predator.
If the Allosaurus moves at least 20 feet straight toward a target and hits it with a claw attack on the same turn, the target must succeed on a DC 15 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone.

Relentless Pursuit (1/Turn).
When a creature within 60 feet of the Allosaurus attempts to disengage or flee (moves out of its reach), the Allosaurus can move up to half its speed as a reaction.

Actions

Multiattack.
The Allosaurus makes two attacks: one with its bite and one with its claws. If the target is prone, it may instead make both attacks with advantage.

Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +8 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target.
Hit: 22 (3d10 + 5) piercing damage. If the target is Large or smaller, it must make a DC 16 Strength saving throw or be grappled (escape DC 16). While grappled, the target is restrained, and the Allosaurus cannot bite another target.

Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: +8 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target.
Hit: 18 (3d8 + 5) slashing damage.

Severing Lunge (Recharge 5–6).
The Allosaurus lunges forward with terrifying speed, targeting a creature within 15 feet. The target must succeed on a DC 16 Dexterity saving throw or take 36 (8d8) slashing damage and fall prone as the Allosaurus tears through flesh. On a successful save, the target takes half damage and isn’t knocked prone.

Bonus Actions

Savage Roar (Recharge 6).
The Allosaurus releases a thunderous, territorial roar. All creatures of its choice within 30 feet that can hear it must succeed on a DC 14 Wisdom saving throw or be frightened until the end of their next turn. Creatures that fail by 5 or more are also stunned until the end of their current turn.

Tactics & Combat Behavior

  • Ambush Predator: Allosaurus prefers to attack from cover—using terrain like forests or tall rocks to stay hidden. It often begins combat with Momentum Predator and Severing Lunge to drop enemies prone early.
  • Target Weak Links: It uses Pack Opportunist to focus on isolated or injured foes, and will quickly switch targets to exploit flanking or support from allies.
  • Chase Instinct: When prey tries to flee, Relentless Pursuit keeps it close, turning retreats into deadly opportunities.
  • Crowd Control: Savage Roar is used to scatter or soften up clustered adventurers before closing in for the kill.
  • Prioritizes Grapples: Against casters or archers, the Allosaurus often grapples with Bite to restrain and eliminate the threat quickly.

Legendary Variant (Optional)

For a named or ancient Allosaurus, consider adding one legendary action:

Legendary Action – Tail Sweep (Costs 1 Action):
The Allosaurus makes a tail attack against all creatures in a 10-foot arc behind it.
Hit: 14 (2d8 + 5) bludgeoning damage. Creatures hit must succeed on a DC 15 Dex save or be knocked prone.

ABOUT

While smaller than the more famous Tyrannosaurus rex, the allosaurus is a fearsome predator. It is far stealthier than its larger kin and more likely to strike in ambush from behind large trees. Allosauruses tend to travel in pairs, either mated pairs or a pair of siblings of the same sex. Territorial, allosauruses are known to track foes for miles before making their presence known in a snarling, roaring attack.
