“Valkyrie: Celestial Warrior of Valor and the Chooser of the Fallen”

Valkyrie: Celestial Warrior of Valor and the Chooser of the Fallen
Create

A Valkyrie is a celestial warrior of Norse legend, an awe-inspiring and ethereal figure who selects the bravest fallen warriors for Odin’s hall or Freya’s Fólkvangr, striking both fear and reverence across mortal battlefields.

Appearance

Valkyries are tall, formidable humanoid women, clad in gleaming armor etched with runes and adorned with flowing hair that moves as if caught in an unseen wind. Their eyes flash like storm-lit skies, and many bear feathered wings or a spectral aura of motion. They wield spears or swords imbued with divine power, radiating majesty and menace in equal measure.

Behaviour

Purposeful and resolute, Valkyries rarely act without intent. They survey battlefields with unwavering focus, descending upon the worthy dead with precision. Though merciless in combat, they honor valor above cruelty or malice, acting as impartial agents of divine judgment.

Habitat

Valkyries inhabit the liminal spaces between mortal and divine realms, often appearing in the skies above battlefields, sacred sites, or the paths leading to Odin’s Valhalla or Freya’s Fólkvangr. They are not tied to a single territory, instead roaming wherever their divine duties call.

Modus Operandi

They favor swift, decisive action, using flight or supernatural speed to dominate the battlefield. They identify the bravest or most heroic warriors, claiming their souls either during combat or at the moment of death. Their role is not conquest but divine selection, ensuring the fallen reach the halls of Odin or Freya according to valor and fate.

Motivation

Bound by loyalty to both Odin and Freya, Valkyries act to honor courage and heroism. Their instinct is to witness, judge, and retrieve the souls of worthy warriors, securing the strongest for the eternal battles of Ragnarok or the service of the gods.

Innate Spellcasting

The Valkyrie’s innate spellcasting ability is Charisma (spell save DC 18). She can innately cast the following spells, requiring no material components:

  • At will: Detect Evil and Good, Light
  • 3/day each: Divine Favor, Magic Weapon, Fly
  • 1/day each: Destructive Wave, Guardian of Faith

Celestial Resilience

The Valkyrie regains 10 HP at the start of her turn if she has at least 1 hit point.

Divine Smite (Recharge 5–6)

When the Valkyrie hits with a melee weapon attack, she can expend a spell slot to deal radiant damage in addition to the weapon’s damage: 2d8 for a 1st-level slot, plus 1d8 per spell level higher than 1st.

Actions

Multiattack. The Valkyrie makes two attacks with her chosen weapon: spear or longsword.

Spear. Melee or Ranged Weapon Attack: +10 to hit, reach 10 ft. or range 20/60 ft., one target. Hit: 12 (1d8 + 8) piercing damage plus 9 (2d8) radiant damage.

Longsword. Melee Weapon Attack: +10 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 10 (1d8 + 6) slashing damage plus 7 (2d6) radiant damage.

Shield Bash. Melee Weapon Attack: +10 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 9 (1d6 + 6) bludgeoning damage. The target must succeed on a DC 18 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone.

Aura of Valor (Recharge 5–6). Allies within 30 ft. gain a +2 bonus to attack rolls and saving throws for 1 minute.

Reactions

Shield of the Fallen. When a creature the Valkyrie can see attacks an ally within 30 ft., she can interpose her shield, granting that ally +5 AC against the attack.

Legendary Actions

They can take 3 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one legendary action can be used at a time and only at the end of another creature’s turn.

  • Attack. The Valkyrie makes one weapon attack.
  • Move. The Valkyrie moves up to half her speed without provoking opportunity attacks.
  • Divine Smite (Costs 2 Actions). She uses her Divine Smite feature.

Mounted Combat

Celestial Warhorse. The Valkyrie may ride a flying celestial steed (use Pegasus or celestial warhorse stats). The mount has:

  • Fly speed 90 ft., hover
  • Immunity to poison and psychic damage
  • Advantage on saving throws against being frightened while ridden
  • Can take the Dash, Disengage, or Dodge action on the rider’s turn

Aerial Tactics. While mounted, the Valkyrie attacks from the air using her chosen weapon for two strikes per turn. She swoops in to strike priority targets, uses her shield defensively to protect allies, and maneuvers to avoid large clusters of weaker foes.

Tactics

Valkyries prioritize precision and divine judgment. They strike the bravest enemies with spear or sword, defend allies with their shield, and exploit aerial mobility to control the battlefield. Legendary actions allow them to buff allies, smite with radiant energy, and maintain tactical superiority, focusing on selecting worthy souls for Odin or Freya rather than indiscriminate slaughter. Their flowing hair, Viking-style armor, and radiant aura mark them as awe-inspiring agents of the gods.

Surrounded by lightning, this impressive female warrior wears a gleaming golden breastplate and carries a shining spear.

The Valkyries bring fallen heroes to and carry them to feast with Odin in the halls of Valhalla. The Valkyries are the warrior maidens of Odin. Odin splits half the warriors who fell in combat with Freyr, and so his Valkyries would collect his half of the dead.

Although extremely beautiful, the Valkyries’ love of battle makes them rather grim. When a battle is about to occur, they rush out of Asgard singing their deafening, foreboding song. If the battle is to occur on land, they travel on flying white horses and pour bucketfuls of gore over the battlefield. If the battle is to occur at sea, they sail into the battle in a ghastly boat under clouds of bloody rain.

While waiting in Asgard for the next battle, the Valkyries pass the time by weaving battle garments, and by serving mead and ale to Odin‘s warriors in Valhalla. They have the power to raise any hero who fell in combat, to see bloodshed anywhere in Midgard, and to predict the outcome of a battle. There are twenty-seven Valkyries, all beautiful, golden-haired battle-maidens.

Asgardian Weapons. The valkyrie’s weapon attacks are magical. When she hits with any weapon, it does an extra 11 (2d10) radiant damage (included in attacks listed below).

Cloak of Doom. Any living creature that starts its turn within 60 feet of a valkyrie senses her unsettling presence and must succeed on a DC 16 Charisma saving throw or be frightened for 1d4 rounds. Those who succeed are immune to the effect for 24 hours. The valkyrie can suppress this aura at will.

Valkyries are outsiders who scour the battlefields of the Material Plane for warriors of great prowess and legendary renown. With a glance, a valkyrie can tell who is near death and ready to give up life and who fights on to live another day, and can either claim the soul of the slain or aid the living to continue the fight.

Valkyries are always female, and appear as strong and beautiful human, dwarven, or elven women. A human valkyrie is 6 feet tall and weighs close to 200 pounds. Valkyries serve a variety of deities, though they are most often associated with the gods of war, conflict, valor, and courage. Although capable combatants in their own right, valkyries are almost always encountered mounted, typically on flying steeds such as dragon horses, pegasi, or sleipnirs.

SPECIAL ABILITIES
Battle Trained (Ex): valkyrie is proficient with all armor. Armor never impacts a valkyrie’s speed, nor does a valkyrie take armor check penalties on Ride checks.

Choose the Slain (Su): A valkyrie can draw the soul from a newly dead body and store it in her spear for transport to the Outer Planes. This functions as soul bind, but the dead creature must be willing to have its soul taken. If the creature is unwilling, this ability has no effect.

Holy Zeal (Su): A valkyrie adds her Charisma modifier as a deflection bonus to her Armor Class.
