Blessings of the Seelie

Blessings of the Seelie
Created with Midjourney

Wondrous rewards for mortal deeds, and the subtle shaping of destiny

Seelie fey are renowned for their generosity, subtle guidance, and capricious whims. They often encourage mortals and other creatures to act on their behalf by granting blessings—sometimes for deliberate service, sometimes for simple acts of kindness. Unlike the Unseelie, who favor cunning or coercion, Seelie fey prefer to empower others to achieve great deeds, weaving influence and magic through those willing to serve or assist.

Nature of a Seelie Blessing

A Seelie blessing can take many forms, including:

  • Wishes and limited magical boons: From a single-use limited wish to minor reality-altering favors.
  • Spell-like abilities: Temporary access to spells or fey-inspired magical effects.
  • Feats and abilities: Qualifications for feats such as Nymph’s Kiss or other fey affinity traits.
  • Healing and restoration: Mastery of Seelie healing arts, often surpassing conventional magic.
  • Other fey boons: Inspired by gifts offered by nymphs or benevolent fey entities.

Seelie fey often reserve their most potent blessings for long-term allies but are equally willing to reward a single heroic act. Other fey courts occasionally grant boons in this manner, but they do so less frequently, preferring intrigue or barter.

Examples of Blessings in Action

  • Nymphs in Need: A sisterhood of nymphs, pursued by evil mages seeking to enslave them, offers their favor to any who dare thwart the villains. Those who succeed may gain spell-like powers, healing boons, or personal blessings.
  • Court of Coral: After a bloody battle with the Unseelie leaves their forces decimated, a branch of the Court of Coral hears of the party’s heroics. In gratitude, they send an envoy bearing the power of the sea—granting a limited wish in exchange for aid in opposing the Unseelie Court.

Seelie Blessings: Optional Mechanics

Seelie blessings provide both narrative and mechanical benefits. Dungeon Masters can use these rules to integrate fey rewards into their campaigns.

Granting a Blessing

  • Trigger: After an act of service, heroic deed, or story milestone.
  • Duration: Permanent (feats, lasting magical gifts) or temporary (hours, days, or until a specific goal is completed).
  • Conditions: Some blessings may require continued service, moral alignment maintenance, or acknowledgment of the fey’s favor.
