Places of interest include the Bamberg Cathedral, a magnificent example of Romanesque architecture, the popular town of Bamberg, and the Altenburg Castle, a fortress that sits on a hill overlooking the city. The current ruler is Prince-Bishop Johann III, who is also the local ruler. Other notable residents include the scholar and theologian Johannes von Neumarkt and the artist Hans von Bamberg.

In the folklore of Bamberg, there is the “Wild Hunt” which is said to be a ghostly procession of huntsmen and hounds that ride through the night sky, led by the god Odin himself. The locals believe that if one sees the Wild Hunt, it is a sign of impending death or disaster.
