Richelieu oversaw the construction of his own palace in Paris, the Palais-Cardinal. As a famous patron of the arts, he sends his agents abroad in search of books and manuscripts for his unrivaled library bound as codices in red. He was a lover of the theatre, not considered a respectable art form, his private theatre is a feature of the Palais-Cardinal. It’s paintings celebrate the major events of his career, his Galerie has historicizing portraits of great men with his face.
The fittings of his private chapel in the Palais-Cardinal, are of solid gold-set with rubies and diamonds. His taste also runs to Chinese porcelains, tapestries and Persian carpets, cabinets from Italy and Antwerp and a massive heart-shaped diamond.
There is also the Château Richelieu and the town of Richelieu. To the château, he’s added one of the largest art collections in Europe and the largest collection of ancient sculpture in France.
