You know how to disarm opponents in melee combat.

Prerequisites: Intelligence 13, Combat Expertise.

Benefit: You do not provoke an attack of opportunity when you attempt to disarm an opponent, nor does the opponent have a chance to disarm you. You also gain a +4 bonus on the opposed attack roll you make to disarm your opponent.

Normal: See the normal disarm rules.

Special: A fighter may select Improved Disarm as one of his fighter bonus feats.

A monk may select Improved Disarm as a bonus feat at 6th level, even if she does not meet the prerequisites.

How Improved Disarm Works

Improved Disarm makes a disarm attempt safer and more reliable. You do not provoke an attack of opportunity for making the attempt, the opponent does not get the normal chance to disarm you in return if your attempt fails, and you gain +4 on the opposed attack roll used to resolve the disarm.

Improved Disarm Example

A fighter tries to knock a sword from an enemy’s hand. Improved Disarm removes the usual attack of opportunity for attempting the manoeuvre and adds +4 to the fighter’s opposed attack roll. If the attempt fails, the opponent does not receive the normal counter-disarm opportunity from that failure.

When It Is Useful

  • Against enemies whose weapon is central to their threat.
  • For characters who prefer control and equipment denial over raw damage.
  • For builds already using Combat Expertise, which is one of the prerequisites.

See the Feats index for other tactical combat options.
