This material is Open Game Content, and is licensed for public use under the terms of the Open Game License v1.0a.
Benefit: You gain a +4 bonus on the following checks and saves: Swim checks made to resist nonlethal damage, Constitution checks made to continue running, Constitution checks made to avoid nonlethal damage from a forced march, Constitution checks made to hold your breath, Constitution checks made to avoid nonlethal damage from starvation or thirst, Fortitude saves made to avoid nonlethal damage from hot or cold environments, and Fortitude saves made to resist damage from suffocation. Also, you may sleep in light or medium armor without becoming fatigued.
Normal: A character without this feat who sleeps in medium or heavier armor is automatically fatigued the next day.
Special: A ranger automatically gains Endurance as a bonus feat at 3rd level. He need not select it.
What Endurance Covers
Endurance improves the checks and saves that measure long-term physical stamina rather than ordinary combat toughness. Its +4 bonus applies to the specific situations listed in the feat: resisting nonlethal damage while swimming, running, forced marching, holding breath, enduring starvation or thirst, surviving harsh heat or cold, and resisting suffocation damage.
Endurance in Exploration
- Long-distance travel: forced marches and repeated running checks become safer.
- Hostile environments: the feat improves the listed Fortitude saves against extreme heat and cold.
- Water and air hazards: prolonged swimming, breath-holding and suffocation are all situations where the feat can matter.
- Armoured travel: the character can sleep in light or medium armor without becoming fatigued from doing so.
What Endurance Does Not Do
Endurance is not a blanket +4 bonus on all Constitution checks or all Fortitude saves. The bonus applies only to the circumstances named by the feat. It also does not directly increase hit points; its value comes from making exhaustion, exposure and extended physical strain easier to survive.
