The schoolhouse door is open, but the children are gone. Ichabod Crane has dismissed them early after a pupil reports that a rider without a head crossed the marsh road. He has carefully copied every word. He is now searching for someone brave enough to accompany him home.

Ichabod teaches the children of Sleepy Hollow, leads singing at gatherings and collects old stories with a scholar’s appetite and a frightened man’s imagination. Tall, thin and awkward in his clothes, he knows the old households, can read a disputed account and remembers every whispered legend. He is less capable of judging when fear has made a witness unreliable.

A Clever Man Who Believes Too Much

His pupils genuinely learn from him, but his discipline is severe by the standards of a kindly tutor. A flat wooden ferule lies near his desk, and a birch rod hangs behind his stool for corporal punishment. He believes the rod is part of his duty to parents: he is more lenient towards frail children, but stubborn pupils know that his threats have force. His affection for his pupils does not soften his belief in harsh discipline.

Away from school, he is sociable and grateful to households that give him meals and lodging. He wants a secure home and hopes to court Katrina Van Tassel, whose beauty and confidence enchant him almost as much as her family’s prosperity.

Crane is dutiful rather than fearless. He will lend his knowledge to find a lost traveller, speak up when a child is blamed without evidence and help reconcile quarrelling neighbours. But he enjoys praise, worries about his standing and is deeply susceptible to a frightening story told at twilight. His greatest error is to treat a vivid account as a proven fact.

Playing Ichabod

Voice: educated, precise and inclined to quote books; faster and higher when alarmed. Manner: taps his ferule against the school desk, smooths his cuffs, checks the road behind him and carries a notebook wherever he goes. Useful knowledge: family names, school records, old trails, rumours and the whereabouts of local witnesses. Weakness: he often mistakes a staged haunting for a real one. When danger comes: his first impulse is to flee; his second is to make sure that no pupil has been left behind.

People Who Matter

Katrina Van Tassel: Ichabod wants her favour, yet he has not decided how much of his dream concerns Katrina herself and how much concerns her father’s comfortable farm. Katrina makes her own choices and understands more of both suitors’ weaknesses than they suspect.

Abraham “Brom Bones” Van Brunt: Brom’s riding skill, confidence and practical jokes make him a formidable rival. Ichabod avoids a fight and resents being made a fool in public. Yet Brom knows the woodland roads better than most, and there are nights when his help may be indispensable.

The Headless Horseman: Every broken lantern or distant hoofbeat makes Ichabod recall a tale of the rider. Some reports are pranks or mistaken identities, but the old road is genuinely haunted. Ichabod has little chance of telling the difference without help.

What Is Happening Right Now?

A ferryman has vanished on the road above the river. The witnesses disagree: one heard hoofbeats, another saw a horse without a rider, and a third remembers a stranger leading a covered cart towards the old bridge. Ichabod has written down their accounts but fears the Headless Horseman is involved. Brom dismisses the incident as a merchant’s quarrel, while Katrina demands that someone find the missing man before nightfall.

What he knows: The ferryman carried a parcel for a family above the Hollow. Ichabod has the family’s name, the ferry schedule and three conflicting statements. He offers the records freely, though he will not walk the dark road alone.

Rumours and Adventure Hooks

The Missing Pages

Three leaves have been torn from the school register. They identify households whose children witnessed stolen cargo unloaded at the river. Ichabod suspects Brom, but a buyer linked to Mother Mandelbaum’s exchange in New Amsterdam is searching for the same families. Recover the pages before the buyer finds a witness.

The Wrong Rider

Witnesses report two sightings of the Horseman on opposite banks within minutes. Ichabod’s records show that a mortal rider could not have made both crossings. One apparition is a smuggler’s disguise; the other leaves no hoofprints at all. Discover which is which before the smugglers move their cargo.

Gunpowder Returns Alone

Gunpowder, the old horse borrowed from Hans Van Ripper, stumbles home with muddy tack and an empty saddle. Ichabod has barricaded himself inside a disused mill, convinced that Brom has lured him into another prank. A living pursuer is following him, but something older is stirring in the millstream. Find him before the rider reaches the mill.

Where to Find Him

By day, Ichabod teaches in the schoolhouse or visits pupils’ families. In the evening he copies stories beside a neighbour’s hearth or calls at the Van Tassel farm. He knows the lanes and river crossings around New Netherland, but will not willingly cross the haunted bridge after dark. His ferule and birch remain at school; his notebook, chalk and protective charms offer little help on the road.

Ichabod Crane — Game Statistics

Ichabod is an educated schoolmaster, not a soldier or sorcerer. He survives by observation, persuasion and escaping danger. His schoolroom ferule becomes an improvised weapon only if he is cornered.
