Jack Sheppard — The Gaol-Breaker of London

Jack Sheppard is a locksmith’s apprentice turned housebreaker whose true talent is not stealing into buildings but getting out of places designed to keep him in. He understands hinges, bars, locks, rooflines and human routines with the same instinct other men bring to swordplay. Every escape makes him more famous, and every public failure by the authorities makes the next gaoler more determined to prove that Jack can finally be held.
In the campaign, Sheppard is a young London criminal whose repeated escapes from watch houses and Newgate have made him a folk hero among apprentices, servants and people who enjoy seeing officials embarrassed. He is not Robin Hood. He steals for himself, lies when convenient and regularly endangers friends. What makes him compelling is the almost impossible confidence that every wall contains a route out.

What Is Jack Sheppard Doing Right Now?
Jack has escaped custody again, but this time he left Newgate carrying something that was never his: a strip of parchment hidden behind a loose stone in his cell. It contains a list of names, dates and payments made to gaol officers. He cannot read enough of the clerk’s abbreviations to understand it, but he knows officials are more frightened of the parchment than they are angry about his escape.
Jack is hiding among workshops and taverns while deciding whom to sell it to. The watch wants him back. A criminal broker wants the list. Someone inside Newgate wants Jack dead before he learns what it proves.
Encounters
- The party finds Jack inside a locked room they were certain was empty.
- A gaoler offers a reward for Jack’s capture but refuses to explain why the reward is unusually high.
- Jack asks the adventurers to create a public distraction while he rescues another prisoner.
- The party needs to enter a fortified London building and everyone they ask gives the same answer: find Sheppard.
Personality
Jack is cheerful under pressure, vain about his escapes and incapable of leaving a difficult lock alone. He dislikes violence and prefers to make authorities look foolish, but repeated pursuit has taught him to use a knife when cornered.
His greatest weakness is fame. He could vanish if he truly wanted to. Instead, he enjoys hearing strangers repeat stories about the escape no one thought possible.
Relationships
London apprentices: many admire Jack because he began as one of them.
Gaolers and watch officers: his repeated escapes have made him personally humiliating to men whose authority depends on locked doors meaning something.
Jonathan Wild: a criminal organiser who would rather turn Jack’s fame into profit than see him hanged.
The Artful Dodger: admires Jack’s escapes and considers them proof that grown men overvalue locks.
Equipment
- Two daggers
- Lock picks
- Small hammer and narrow iron wedges
- Wax, wire and bits of bent spring steel
- Dark cloak
- Several false keys
- The stolen Newgate payment list
Adventure Hooks
- Escape Number Four: the party is hired to make sure Jack does not escape again—and discovers someone inside the gaol is trying to kill him.
- The Payment List: Jack’s stolen parchment implicates officers, thieves and a respected household.
- Open This Door: the party needs Jack’s skill, but finding him means outrunning the same watch patrols hunting him.
- The Apprentice Hero: copycat burglars begin imitating Jack and one of them dies inside a trapped noble house.
- One Last Lock: Jack promises to leave London if the party helps him break into a room no thief has ever opened.

Historical Inspiration and Rules Notes
The historical Jack Sheppard was an eighteenth-century English thief celebrated for repeated escapes from imprisonment. This campaign version translates the locksmith-apprentice, housebreaker and escape-artist identity into fifteenth-century London. The game statistics are original campaign adaptations.
