Mielikki — Mistress of the Forest, Game & Woodland Abundance
Mielikki is the mistress and hostess of the forest household. Hunters ask her to open the stores of Metsola, release game, guide the forest maidens and let the woodland show its generous face rather than its empty one.

Hostess of Metsola
Who Is Mielikki?
Mielikki is not merely a gentle protector of animals. She governs whether the forest is generous. The runic hunter asks for the stores of the woodland to be opened, for game to be released and for the paths to lead somewhere useful.
Her old poetic identity is rich in contrast. When the hunt succeeds, the forest mistress is imagined in beauty, gold, silver and bright clothing. When the forest withholds game, that splendour disappears. The image tells the hunter something practical: the same woodland can be abundant or barren depending on how its powers receive you.
Mielikki’s kindness is therefore active rather than sentimental. She can heal an injured beast, guide a lost traveller or place game in a hunter’s path, but she can just as easily close the forest’s stores against someone who takes wastefully.
Runic Tradition
Mielikki in Finnish Myth
Forest invocations preserved in the Kalevala repeatedly address Mielikki as the mistress, mother or hostess of the woodland. Hunters ask her to take her golden keys, open Tapio’s stores and send the forest maidens to help guide game.
The imagery matters. The forest has a household and treasury. Game is wealth held within it. Mielikki is one of the powers who decides when that wealth may pass into mortal hands.
Tellervo, Tuulikki and other forest maidens belong to this same household, while Nyyrikki marks routes and helps hunters cross difficult ground. Mielikki’s page therefore sits at the centre of an entire forest network rather than standing alone as a generic nature goddess.

Forest Hostess. Allies within 60 feet have Advantage on Wisdom (Survival) checks and saving throws against poison, disease and exhaustion caused by natural environments.

Mielikki uses Wisdom for divine spellcasting: spell save DC 28, +20 to hit with spell attacks.

Hunting Spear (+3). Melee or Ranged Weapon Attack: +19 to hit, reach 10 ft. or range 60/180 ft., one target. Hit: 43 (3d10 + 10 piercing plus 3d10 radiant) damage. If the target damaged a Beast since the end of Mielikki’s last turn, the attack deals an additional 18 (4d8) force damage.
Open the Stores of Metsola (Recharge 5–6). Mielikki chooses up to six allies she can see within 120 feet. Each regains 44 (8d8 + 8) hit points, may immediately stand from Prone and may move up to half its Speed without provoking Opportunity Attacks.
Close the Forest (Recharge 6). Enemies in a 60-foot-radius area within 180 feet must succeed on a DC 28 Wisdom saving throw or become unable to perceive paths, tracks or creatures farther than 30 feet away until the end of Mielikki’s next turn. The area is Difficult Terrain for them.
Bonus Action
Golden Key. Mielikki teleports up to 60 feet to an unoccupied space adjacent to a tree, animal trail or natural opening she can see.
Reaction
Protect the Quarry. When a Beast or ally within 120 feet takes damage, Mielikki reduces that damage by 31 (7d8). If this reduces the damage to 0, the protected creature may move up to 20 feet.
Legendary Actions
- Woodland Step — 1 Action. Mielikki moves up to half her Speed without provoking Opportunity Attacks.
- Hunting Spear — 1 Action. Mielikki makes one Hunting Spear attack.

Mythic Trait — The Forest Opens
Once per encounter, when Mielikki would be reduced to 0 hit points in natural terrain, she instead regains 250 hit points. For 1 minute, allies within 120 feet regain 10 hit points at the start of their turns while standing on natural ground, and hostile creatures cannot benefit from being Invisible within that area.

Current Divine Order
What Is Mielikki Doing Right Now?
The forest stores are opening at the wrong time. Berries ripen under frost, deer gather near settlements instead of withdrawing into winter cover, and honey-scent drifts from trees months before blossom.
Mielikki is not causing the abundance. She is tracing it.
Someone has learned how to imitate the signs of her favour closely enough to lure hunters, animals and forest spirits toward chosen places. Mielikki is sending trusted guides through the woodland to discover who benefits each time the forest becomes unnaturally generous.
Worship of Mielikki
Mielikki is honoured by people whose survival depends on the forest giving rather than merely existing. Hunters, trappers, healers, foragers and woodland households ask her for safe passage, game, medicinal growth and the return of animals to exhausted country.
Offerings are often things the forest can use or reclaim: food, drink, bright thread, polished metal, combs, needles and small crafted objects. The point is reciprocal abundance. A hunter takes something valuable and leaves something of value behind.
Her rites also govern restraint. Wounded animals should not be left to die slowly. Young should not be taken needlessly. A successful hunter is expected to understand when enough has been taken.
Relationships
Tapio. Lord of the forest and Mielikki’s closest divine counterpart. Tapio governs the woodland as realm; Mielikki governs its hospitality, abundance and stores.
Nyyrikki. A forest son associated with marked paths and guidance through difficult country.
Tellervo and Tuulikki. Forest maidens of the same household, associated with animals, game and the guidance of hunters.
Otso. The sacred bear belongs to the ritual world of the forest but is not reduced to Mielikki’s pet or servant.
Ukko. Rain and storm determine whether the forest’s stores refill. Mielikki’s abundance depends on the sky without being subordinate to it.
Domain Spells & Divine Gifts
Suggested 5.5e domain spells: 1st—animal friendship, cure wounds; 2nd—pass without trace, lesser restoration; 3rd—plant growth, speak with plants; 4th—freedom of movement, locate creature; 5th—commune with nature, greater restoration; 6th—heal, wall of thorns; 7th—regenerate, transport via plants; 8th—animal shapes, control weather; 9th—mass heal, shapechange.
Divine gift — Forest Hostess. A devotee carrying Mielikki’s blessing can forage enough food for twice the normal number of creatures and gains Advantage on checks made to calm frightened or wounded beasts.
Divine Relic — The Golden Keys of Metsola
The old songs place keys and the opening of forest stores directly in Mielikki’s imagery. In the campaign, the Golden Keys of Metsola are a divine relic that does not unlock ordinary doors. Each key opens a different kind of forest abundance: game, medicinal plants, safe passage, clean water or hidden shelter.
A mortal entrusted with one key may once per long rest cast commune with nature without material components. The answer always concerns the forest’s available abundance first: what is present, what is missing and what has been taken out of balance.
Meeting Mielikki
Mielikki often tests visitors through abundance rather than deprivation. A starving party may find food too easily. A hunter may be offered a perfect shot at an animal carrying young. A wounded predator may lie directly across the safest trail.
The question is whether the characters understand that a gift from the forest creates responsibility. Those who take everything offered discover that the generosity stops immediately.
If violence begins, Mielikki protects vulnerable creatures first, then removes mobility and visibility from aggressors. She does not need to out-damage a war god; she makes the attackers unable to reach what they intended to harm.
Adventure Hooks
- The Orchard in the Pines. Fruit trees appear overnight deep in conifer forest, heavy with ripe produce. Every animal that eats there begins walking in the same direction.
- The Key with No Lock. A golden key is found inside a deer track after fresh snow. No door in the settlement accepts it.
- The Empty Game Trail. Hunters find thousands of tracks but no animals. Mielikki says something is copying signs without creating life.
- Honey in Winter. A frozen tree begins dripping warm honey. Anyone tasting it dreams of the same hidden clearing.
- The Forest’s Debt. A village has enjoyed impossible hunting for a generation. Mielikki has arrived to collect what was promised when the bargain began.
