Apate, the deity of deceit, is a chaotic neutral being with a reputation for her cunning ways. She delights in causing chaos and confusion, and her motivations are often shrouded in secrecy. She appears as a beautiful woman with dark hair and piercing eyes, dressed in a flowing robe adorned with intricate embroidery.

She is a master of deception, always seeking to manipulate others to achieve her goals. Her abilities are renowned for their potency, and she can easily change her appearance to suit her needs. Her ultimate goal is to maintain control over the people and events around her, and she will stop at nothing to achieve this.

Apate, the companion of Dolos (Fraz-Urb’luu), the demon of deception, is a goddess of deceit and treachery. She enjoys the chaos and confusion that comes with deception and often works with other trickster gods to create mischief and mayhem.

Despite her love of chaos, sheis not inherently evil. Instead, she sees the world as a game to be played, and she takes great pleasure in outwitting her opponents. She is not without empathy, however, and will often use her powers to help those in need if it suits her purposes.

Apate’s origins are shrouded in mystery, but it is believed that she was born from the chaos that existed before the creation of the world. Her powers were gifted to her by the gods themselves, who saw the value in having a being who could manipulate events to suit their needs.

Today, she is worshipped by those who seek to gain an advantage through deceit and manipulation. Her followers often include thieves, spies, and politicians, who see her as a powerful ally in their quest for power.

Despite her many followers, Apate is a solitary being, preferring to operate in the shadows rather than take center stage. Her ultimate goal is to maintain control over the world, and she will continue to work towards this end no matter the cost.

Legendary Resistance (3/day) If Apate fails a saving throw, she can choose to succeed instead.

Magic Resistance. She has advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects.

Magic Weapons. Her weapon attacks are magical.

Shapechanger. Shecan use her action to polymorph into a Small or Medium humanoid, or back into her true form. Her statistics are the same in each form.

Innate Spellcasting. Her spellcasting ability is Charisma (spell save DC 28). She can innately cast the following spells, requiring no material components:

At will: detect magic, pass without trace, sanctuary 3/day each: confusion, dispel magic, modify memory 1/day each: dominate person, mislead, polymorph

Deceitful. She has advantage on Dexterity (Stealth) checks made to hide and on Charisma (Deception) checks made to deceive.

Multiattack. Apate can use her Frightful Presence. She then makes two attacks: one with her spear and one with her dagger.

Spear. Melee Weapon Attack: +22 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 36 (6d10 + 8) piercing damage. If the target is a creature, it must succeed on a DC 28 Strength saving throw or be pushed up to 10 feet away from Apate.

Dagger. Melee Weapon Attack: +22 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 22 (4d8 + 8) piercing damage.

Frightful Presence. Each creature of Apate’s choice within 120 feet of her and aware of her must succeed on a DC 28 Wisdom saving throw or become frightened for 1 minute. A creature can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success. If a creature’s saving throw is successful or the effect ends for it, the creature is immune to Apate’s Frightful Presence for the next 24 hours.

Divine Artifact. Apate wields the Spear of Deception, a magical spear that deals an additional 2d8 psychic damage on a hit and can cast the mirror image spell once per day.

Lair Actions. On initiative count 20 (losing initiative ties), Apate can take a lair action to cause one of the following effects:

  • Apate causes illusory images of herself to appear, confusing and disorienting her enemies. Each creature within 60 feet of Apate must make a DC 28 Wisdom saving throw or become blinded until the end of their next turn.
  • Apate summons a cloud of smoke to surround her, granting her advantage on Dexterity (Stealth) checks and allowing her to move without provoking opportunity attacks until the end of her turn.
  • Apate creates a false image of herself, causing her enemies to waste their attacks on an illusory duplicate. Apate gains the benefits of the mirror image spell until the end of her next turn.

Legendary Actions.

Apate can take 3 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one legendary action can be used at a time and only at the end of another creature’s turn. Apate regains spent legendary actions at the start of her turn.

  • Attack. Apate makes one spear or dagger attack.
  • Deceive. Apate makes a Charisma (Deception) check contested by a creature’s Wisdom (Insight) check.
  • Disappear. Apate uses her action to magically become invisible until the start of her next turn.

Regional Effects.

The region containing Apate’s lair is warped by her deceitful influence, which creates the following effects:

  • Illusions and deceptions within 1 mile of Apate’s lair are enhanced, becoming more convincing and harder to see through.
  • Creatures within 1 mile of Apate’s lair that attempt to tell the truth must make a DC 28 Charisma saving throw or be compelled to lie instead.
  • Plants within 1 mile of Apate’s lair become twisted and gnarled, taking on unsettling shapes and colors.
