A towering, humanoid figure cloaked in shadowed wings, Camazotz stands over nine feet tall. His leathery, obsidian-black skin is stretched taut over corded muscle, and his head is that of a monstrous bat with sunken, glowing crimson eyes and rows of jagged obsidian teeth. His claws drip with ichor, and from his back unfurl massive wings veined with arcane symbols that shimmer when he hunts. The stench of decay clings to him like incense in a tomb.


Behaviour

Camazotz is a cruel and cunning predator who delights in stalking his prey under cover of darkness. He is both patient and sadistic, known to toy with victims before delivering the fatal blow. In combat, he moves with terrifying speed, using sudden dives and echo-disrupting screeches to disorient foes. Though feral in appearance, his actions reveal a calculating intelligence steeped in ancient knowledge and ritualistic precision.


Habitat

Camazotz lairs deep within vast, labyrinthine cave systems connected to the Maya underworld (Xibalba). His sanctuaries are often hidden behind waterfalls, sinkholes, or dense jungle, and are littered with bones, sacrificial altars, and ancient glyphs soaked in dried blood. Echoes in these caverns carry whispers of his victims’ last screams, eternally bound to the place of their death.


Modus Operandi

Emerging only under moonless skies or blood eclipses, Camazotz preys on warriors, shamans, and trespassers who dare step near his domain. He uses guerrilla tactics—ambushing from above, severing heads in a single motion with his blade-like claws, and vanishing into shadow. Camazotz can command lesser bat fiends to swarm and harass targets while he isolates the strongest for a personal kill. Victims are often dragged back to his cave to be ritually mutilated and offered to dark gods.


Motivation

Driven by an eternal pact with the lords of Xibalba, Camazotz feeds on fear, death, and blood to maintain his immortality and grow his dominion over the living world. He views mortals as arrogant intruders trespassing on sacred lands and seeks to remind them of the supremacy of death. Every decapitated soul serves as tribute to the underworld, and each victim adds to his power and legend.

Traits

Echoes of Xibalba.

Camazotz can move through natural stone, earth, or cave walls as if under the etherealness spell. He can do so only in areas of dim light or darkness.

Legendary Resistance (3/Day).

If Camazotz fails a saving throw, he can choose to succeed instead.

Dark Devourer.

While in dim light or darkness, Camazotz regains 10 hit points at the start of his turn. If he reduces a creature to 0 hit points with a melee attack, he regains 25 hit points instead.

Dead Silence.

Creatures within 30 feet of Camazotz are deafened and cannot speak or cast spells with verbal components unless they are immune to deafness. Camazotz is unaffected by magical silence.


Actions

Multiattack.

Camazotz makes three attacks: one with his Decapitating Claw and two with his Shadow Talons.


Decapitating Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: +11 to hit, reach 10 ft., one creature.

Hit: 22 (4d8 + 6) slashing damage.

  • If the target has 50 hit points or fewer after taking this damage, it must succeed on a DC 18 Constitution saving throw or be decapitated, dying instantly. A creature immune to critical hits or that has no head (such as many undead or oozes) is unaffected. A creature that succeeds on the saving throw cannot be affected by this ability again for 24 hours.

Shadow Talons. Melee Weapon Attack: +11 to hit, reach 5 ft., one creature.

Hit: 17 (2d10 + 6) slashing damage plus 9 (2d8) necrotic damage.


Sonic Dismemberment (Recharge 5–6).

Camazotz releases a devastating echolocation burst in a 60-foot cone. Each creature in the area must make a DC 18 Constitution saving throw, taking 45 (10d8) thunder damage on a failed save, or half as much on a success. Creatures that fail the save are also blinded and deafened for 1 minute and pushed 20 feet away from Camazotz. A creature can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending both conditions on a success.


Summon Bat Fiends (1/Day).

Camazotz summons 2d4 Shadow Bat Fiends (use shadow demon statistics with flying speed 60 ft. and Keen Hearing). The fiends appear in unoccupied spaces within 60 feet of Camazotz and obey his verbal commands for 1 hour or until slain.


Bonus Actions

Cloak of Wings (Recharge 4–6).

Camazotz wraps his wings around himself and vanishes in a whirl of shadow. He teleports up to 60 feet to an unoccupied space he can see in dim light or darkness. The space he leaves becomes heavily obscured until the end of his next turn.


Legendary Actions

Camazotz can take 3 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one legendary action option can be used at a time and only at the end of another creature’s turn. He regains spent legendary actions at the start of his turn.

  • Shadow Step. Camazotz moves up to half his flying speed without provoking opportunity attacks.
  • Grave Screech (Costs 2 Actions). All creatures of Camazotz’s choice within 10 feet must succeed on a DC 17 Wisdom saving throw or be frightened until the end of their next turn.
  • Blood Offering (Costs 3 Actions). Camazotz targets a creature that died within 30 feet of him this turn. He regains 20 hit points and all allies within 60 feet gain advantage on their next attack roll before the end of their next turn.

Lair Actions (Optional)

If Camazotz is encountered in his lair (a shadowed cave system tied to the underworld), he can use lair actions on initiative count 20 (losing initiative ties). He can’t use the same effect two rounds in a row.

  • Shrieking Darkness. All nonmagical light sources within 60 feet are extinguished. Magical light is suppressed until the start of the next round.
  • Bat Swarm. A 30-foot radius centered on a point within 60 feet becomes difficult terrain and heavily obscured by spectral bats until initiative count 20 on the next round.
  • Blood Seep. A pool of blood bubbles up from the stone. One creature of Camazotz’s choice within 60 feet must succeed on a DC 17 Dexterity saving throw or be restrained as spectral hands attempt to drag it into the stone.

This ancient fiend, born in the endless black of the Maya underworld Xibalba, was once the executioner of forgotten gods. SPECIAL ABILITIES


Blood Offering (Su)
Once per round, when a creature within 60 feet of Camazotz dies, he may absorb its soul as a free action, healing 30 hit points. All allies (including Camazotz) within 30 feet gain a +2 morale bonus on attack rolls for 1 round.


Dead Silence Aura (Su)
Creatures within 30 feet of Camazotz are deafened unless they succeed at a DC 22 Fortitude save. While deafened in this aura, creatures cannot cast spells with verbal components unless they succeed at a concentration check (DC 25 + spell level). Camazotz is unaffected by magical silence.


Decapitating Claw (Ex)
If Camazotz confirms a critical hit with his claw against a creature with a head and that creature has 60 or fewer hit points, it must succeed on a DC 23 Fortitude save or be instantly decapitated and slain. This is a death effect. Creatures immune to critical hits or lacking a discernible head are immune to this effect.


Echoes of Xibalba (Su)
While in natural caves, ruins, or areas of dim light or darkness, Camazotz may move through stone and earth as though affected by ethereal jaunt.


Planar Adaptation (Ex)
Camazotz is constantly affected by freedom of movement and air walk while underground or in dim light.


Shadowmeld (Ex)
While in dim light or darkness, Camazotz gains total concealment against creatures more than 30 feet away and concealment against those within 30 feet. He can attempt Stealth checks in such conditions even while observed.


Sonic Dismemberment (Su) (Recharge 1d4 rounds)
Once every 1d4 rounds, Camazotz can emit a deafening echolocative scream in a 60-foot cone. All creatures in the area take 5d6 sonic damage (Reflex DC 22 half). Creatures that fail the save are also blinded and deafened for 1 minute, pushed 20 feet away, and knocked prone.


Summon Bat Fiends (Sp) (1/day)
Camazotz can summon 2d4 shadow demons or 3d6 advanced fiendish dire bats. These creatures appear anywhere within 60 feet and serve him for 1 hour or until slain. This functions as summon monster IX.


TACTICS

Before Combat
Camazotz uses greater teleport or invisibility to reach the deepest shadows before striking. He will often drop deeper darkness to control the battlefield and suppress light-based threats.

During Combat
Camazotz opens with Sonic Dismemberment to blind and disorient enemies, followed by Summon Bat Fiends to isolate or harass ranged attackers. He uses Flyby Attack and concealment to strike and retreat, targeting spellcasters first. When an enemy is weakened, he goes in for a decapitating claw kill.

Morale
Camazotz fights savagely but is not mindless. If reduced below 30 hp and significantly outmatched, he uses greater teleport to escape into the underworld.

Camazotz is a demon of blood and silence. Worshiped in hushed tones by jungle cults and feared by those who live near ancient ruins, this death bat was once an executioner for the gods of Xibalba. Today, he acts as a vengeful predator, feeding on fear and darkness. Wherever his wings spread, light dies—and heads roll.

“Camazotz” – Suddenly a shadow covers everything and you see the hideous spread of a gigantic vampire bat’s black wings dominating the view. The creature has monstrous red eyes and vicious jaws that could chew a whole human being in a single bite. It appears to have a black furred humanoid body.

Camazotz are the bat-like monsters associated with night, death, and sacrifice, encountered by the Maya Hero Twins Hunahpu and Xbalanque during their trials in the underworld of Xibalba. The twins had to spend the night in the House of Bats where they defend themselves from the circling bats. Hunahpu stuck his head out of his blowgun to see if the sun had risen and Camazotz immediately snatched off his head and carried it to the ballcourt to be hung up as the ball to be used by the gods in their next ballgame.

A camatzotz is an evil bat-spirit of the underworld, unable to come to the mortal plane unless summoned by dark magic; once that happens, though, a camatzotz is a scourge on creation, declaring war on everyone and everything. Camatzotzil appear as Gargantuan bat-apes, with simian bodies covered with coarse black hair and 80-foot wingspans.

Combat

A camazotz will repeatedly attempt to maim enemies with its bite attack, seeking to finish them off with its deadly bite ability before they can react. The camazotz takes full advantage of its darkness ability, preferring opponents that cannot see it while it uses its Blindsense ability and Blind- Fight feat to maintain the upper hand.

Darkness (Su): As a free action, a camatzotz can surrounding itself by a cloud of darkness, as the spell at caster level 20th.

Deadly Bite (Ex): A camazotz’ bite attack its unnaturally sharp, giving it a critical threat range of 18-20. Furthermore, if a camatzotz scores a critical hit, it always counts as massive damage, requiring the target to succeed at a Fortitude save (DC 15) or die from shock, regardless of how many points of damage it actually dealt. A creature killed by a camazotz’ bite – and not swallowed whole; see below – is always beheaded or cut in half as the monster bites off the missing body part. This may seriously hinder some attempts at raising or resurrecting the target.

Disease (Su): Supernatural disease –- bite, Fortitude DC 26 (Constitution based), incubation period one hour, damage 1d6 Strength and 1d6 Constitution.

Fear (Su): A camatzotz is constantly surrounded by an aura of fear, requiring living creatures within sight of it to make successful Will saves (DC 24, Charisma based) or become panicked for 2d6 rounds. If a creature succeeds at this save, it cannot be affected by the same camatzotz’ fear aura for the next 24 hours.

Improved Grab (Ex): A camatzotz that successfully hits with a bite attack may start a grapple as a free action, without provoking an attack of opportunity.

Swallow Whole (Ex): A camatzotz that begins its turn grappling an opponent may attempt to swallow its enemy by succeeding at a special grapple check. If the camatzotz wins this grapple, the target is instantly swallowed by the camatzotz. A swallowed target dies in one round from the deadly environment of the camatzotz’body, unless the camatzotz is slain before one round has passed. A camatzotz body can hold no more than one creature of Large or smaller size.

Blindsense (Ex): A camatzotz can detect opponents within 80 feet, by means of sound waves. Opponents still have 100% concealment if the camatzotz cannot see them.

Skills: A camatzotz gains a +8 racial bonus on all HideListen and Move Silently checks. *In dark environments, the Hide bonus goes up to +12.
