Daemon, Leukodaemon (Harbinger of Plague and Decay)

Leukodaemon
Create

The Leukodaemon is a horrifying vision of decay and corruption. It boasts a humanoid form with sinewy, darkened flesh, crowned by a grotesque horse’s skull for a head that radiates an eerie, baleful glow. Its cracked, weathered hooves and tattered, rotting wings—reminiscent of a carrion bird’s—enhance its macabre presence, marking it as a creature born of pestilence and ruin.

Behaviour:
Cunning and malevolent, this daemon employs stealth and calculated aggression to great effect. It stalks its prey with a quiet, predatory grace, using its infectious aura to sap strength and instill terror in nearby foes. In combat, the Leukodaemon seamlessly shifts between ranged attacks and brutal close-quarters engagements, manipulating chaos and exploiting its enemies’ vulnerabilities with a cold, remorseless efficiency.

Habitat:
Inhabiting the blasted and infernal realms of Abaddon, the Leukodaemon thrives amid desolation and decay. It is drawn to landscapes scarred by ancient battles and cursed wastelands where the veil between life and death is perilously thin. Such grim environments not only nurture its dark powers but also serve as a fitting stage for its relentless campaign of corruption.

Modus Operandi:
A master of both ranged and melee warfare, the Leukodaemon alternates between unleashing a devastating “breath of flies” and engaging its foes up close. It hurls magically imbued arrows laced with virulent disease, ensuring that even distant adversaries cannot escape its infectious touch. Its signature ability creates a lingering, toxic cloud of biting flies that continuously weakens and sickens any creature caught within its radius, leaving devastation in its wake.

Motivation:
Driven by an insatiable hunger for decay and suffering, the Leukodaemon acts as an agent of pure entropy. It revels in the spread of disease and the collapse of order, viewing every act of destruction as a triumph over life. In its dark vision, the propagation of decay is not only a means to subdue its foes but a testament to the ultimate power of corruption—a force destined to erase hope and spread unyielding despair.

TRAITS

Aura of Pestilence (Recharge 5-6)

Any creature within 10 feet of the Leukodaemon must succeed on a DC 16 Constitution saving throw or become poisoned for 1 minute. A poisoned creature may repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success.

Legendary Resistance (2/Day)

If the Leukodaemon fails a saving throw, it can choose to succeed instead.

Infectious Aura (Passive)

Creatures within 30 feet of the Leukodaemon suffer disadvantage on saving throws against diseases and poison.

ACTIONS

Multiattack

The Leukodaemon makes two melee attacks with its bite and claws.

Bite (Melee Weapon Attack):

+9 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target.
Hit: 18 (2d10 + 6) piercing damage.

Claws (Melee Weapon Attack):

+9 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target.
Hit: 14 (2d6 + 6) slashing damage.

Contagion Arrow (Ranged Weapon Attack)

+8 to hit, range 150 ft., one target.
Hit: 10 (2d6 + 3) piercing damage plus Contagion (see below). The target must make a DC 16 Constitution saving throw or be affected as though by the Contagion spell.

Breath of Flies (Recharge 5-6)

The Leukodaemon exhales a 20-foot cone of swirling, biting flies. Each creature in the area must make a DC 18 Dexterity saving throw or take 42 (12d6) slashing damage, or half as much on a successful save. Those that take damage are also sickened for 1 minute. The flies remain in the area for 1d4+1 rounds, causing creatures who enter or end their turn in the cloud to make the saving throw again, taking 21 (6d6) slashing damage and becoming sickened if they fail.

SPELL-LIKE ABILITIES (3/Day each)

  • Greater Teleport: The Leukodaemon can teleport itself and up to 100 lbs. of equipment it is carrying to a location it can visualize or has been to before.
  • Dispel Magic: The Leukodaemon can end one spell on itself or a creature it can see within 120 feet.
  • Harm (1/Day): The Leukodaemon can drain the life force from a creature it can see within 60 feet. The target must make a DC 18 Constitution saving throw or take 68 (8d6 + 40) necrotic damage, or half as much on a successful save.

LEGENDARY ACTIONS

The Leukodaemon can take 3 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one legendary action option can be used at a time and only at the end of another creature’s turn. The Leukodaemon regains spent legendary actions at the start of its turn.

  • Claw Attack: The Leukodaemon makes one Claws attack.
  • Fly: The Leukodaemon moves up to its speed without provoking opportunity attacks.
  • Breath of Flies (Costs 2 Actions): The Leukodaemon uses its Breath of Flies ability.

TACTICS & COMBAT BEHAVIOR

  • Pre-Fight Preparation: The Leukodaemon prefers to strike when enemies are weakened or distracted. It uses its Contagion Arrows to weaken foes and spread disease before closing the distance with its terrifying bite and claw attacks.
  • Combat Style: The Leukodaemon uses its Aura of Pestilence and Infectious Aura to make it difficult for enemies to remain close for long, forcing them to move away or suffer from the debilitating effects of poison and disease. Its Breath of Flies ability is used strategically to keep enemies at bay or force them to flee into the cloud, where they become sickened and take additional damage.
  • Movement: With a flight speed of 60 feet, the Leukodaemon is capable of staying mobile and avoiding melee combatants. It uses Greater Teleport to position itself for a surprise attack or to escape if it’s cornered.
  • Legendary Actions: The Leukodaemon makes great use of its legendary actions to maintain pressure on its enemies, often moving or attacking after opponents have acted. By using Fly to keep out of reach or Claw Attack to chip away at an opponent’s health, it never gives its enemies a chance to recover.

MOTIVATION AND BEHAVIOR

The Leukodaemon is a cold, calculating force of nature that thrives in chaos and suffering. It seeks to weaken and spread decay wherever it goes, viewing the spread of disease and suffering as the most direct path to power. It is motivated by an almost primal instinct to create disorder, infect, and enslave through disease.

The Leukodaemon is rarely seen without its dark minions, for it revels in creating armies of sickness and death, making it a feared and respected creature in the realms of the Lower Planes. It will typically use its Legendary Resistance to avoid any debilitating effects from magic or attacks and will often retreat or teleport away to avoid total destruction if it finds itself overwhelmed.

ENVIRONMENT AND ROLE IN THE CAMPAIGN

The Leukodaemon is most commonly found in ruined or desolate regions, particularly swamps, graveyards, or places ravaged by disease and death. It is sometimes summoned by dark necromancers, evil deities, or cults focused on disease, pestilence, and entropy. They are notorious for leading plagues and spreading destruction in areas they occupy.

Originally posted on Pathfinder SRD

Leukodaemons are the dreaded harbingers of disease and pestilence, avatars of death by plague and famine. These horrific fiends stalk battlefields, war-ravaged cities, and blighted lands, feasting on the agony of the dying.

A Leukodaemon stands nearly 10 feet tall, its emaciated frame wrapped in sinewy, corpse-like flesh stretched over powerful, bony limbs. Its head is a grinning, desiccated horse’s skull, its hollow sockets burning with a dim, sickly yellow light. From its back sprout massive, rotting wings, their membranes torn and riddled with holes, resembling the decayed remains of a carrion bird. It moves with an unnatural grace, its cracked hooves clattering against the ground, exuding the stench of death and decay.

Every Leukodaemon carries the essence of pestilence within its diseased body. The air around it churns with swarming flies and unseen contagions, spreading death with every step. Some wield rusted, blight-infused weapons, while others prefer to rain diseased arrows upon their prey. When a Leukodaemon breathes, it expels a plague-ridden swarm of biting flies, devouring flesh and corrupting the land itself.

Tactics & Combat

A Leukodaemon is a cunning and merciless opponent. It prefers to weaken its prey with disease before closing in for the kill. From afar, it fires plague-tainted arrows, each strike infecting its victims with festering sickness. In melee, it slashes with razor-sharp claws and bites with crushing force, spreading filth and decay. When surrounded, it unleashes its Breath of Flies, a swirling storm of biting insects that shreds flesh and overwhelms foes with sickness.

Leukodaemons thrive in battle-ravaged areas, drawn to war, famine, and pestilence. They are often seen among mass graves, war-torn cities, and abandoned plague-ridden villages, reveling in the suffering of mortals. Some serve greater daemon lords of disease, while others act alone, spreading sickness simply for the sake of suffering.

Abilities & Special Traits

  • Infectious Aura – All creatures nearby are weakened, making them more vulnerable to disease.
  • Breath of Flies – A swirling cloud of razor-winged insects that devour flesh and spread sickness.
  • Plague Arrows – Ranged attacks carry virulent contagions, infecting targets on impact.
  • Summon Plaguekin – Calls forth lesser daemons or swarms of diseased creatures to aid it in battle.

“Wherever famine claims the starving, wherever disease chokes the breath of the dying, there the Leukodaemon waits. It does not bring death—it revels in it.”

SPECIAL ABILITIES
Breath of Flies (Su) Once per minute as a standard action, a leukodaemon can unleash a cloud of corpse-bloated, biting black flies in a 20-foot cone. Those caught in the cone take 8d6 points of slashing damage. A DC 21 Reflex save halves this damage. Those who take any damage are also sickened for 1 minute. In addition, the flies linger for 1d4+1 rounds, congealing into a buzzing 20-foot-square cloud centered on the cone’s original point of origin.

Any creature that ends its turn in this cloud must make a DC 21 Reflex save to avoid taking 4d6 points of damage and becoming sickened for 1 minute. This cloud of flies may be dispersed by any area effect that does damage or creates wind of at least strong wind force. All daemons are immune to this effect. The save DCs are Constitution-based.

Contagion (Su) Any arrow a leukodaemon fires from a bow is tainted with disease. If a creature is damaged by a leukodaemon’s arrow, it must make a DC 19 Fortitude save or be affected as if by the spell Contagion. A leukodaemon can manifest arrows at will and never runs out of ammunition.

Infectious Aura (Su) All creatures within 50 feet of a leukodaemon take a –4 penalty on Fortitude saves against disease effects.
