Thriae Soldier, Guardian of the Amber Hive

Thriae Soldier, Guardian of the Amber Hive
Create

The Thriae Soldier is a striking and formidable humanoid, with the upper body of a lithe, armored woman and the lower body of a giant bee. Her wings are translucent and delicate, while her sleek, insectoid lower body ends in a stinger capable of delivering potent venom. Standing at approximately 6 feet tall and weighing about 200 pounds, the soldier’s body is often adorned with intricately crafted weapons and armor, gilded with gold and amber-hued gems, a testament to the craftsmanship of their hive.

Behaviorally, Thriae Soldiers are highly disciplined and focused on their role as protectors of the colony. They are vigilant and alert, often stationed as guards around important areas such as the queen’s chambers or the meditation halls of the seers. Despite their martial prowess, they are also skilled artisans and crafters, constructing their own weapons and armor with precision.

In combat, Thriae Soldiers are ruthless and methodical, using their agility, sharp reflexes, and expert use of the longbow. Their venomous stinger adds an extra layer of danger to their attacks, which they may apply to weapons, especially arrows, for added lethality.

The Thriae Soldier’s habitat is typically within the dense, hidden hives of the Thriae, often located in forests or secluded areas where the colony can thrive undisturbed. The hive is a well-organized structure, with the queen at its heart and soldiers safeguarding the perimeter and the most vital areas.

Their modus operandi in combat involves teamwork, as they often fight in pairs or larger groups, coordinating their movements to overwhelm enemies. They are also known to consume a mystical substance called merope, which enhances their physical and mental abilities, giving them the strength to turn the tide of battle when needed.

Motivated by loyalty to the queen and the survival of their colony, Thriae Soldiers will go to any lengths to protect their hive, making them both fierce defenders and strategic warriors. Their devotion to the hive is paramount, and their actions are driven by a deep sense of duty and the desire to maintain the colony’s strength.

Traits

Hive Loyalty. The Thriae Soldier has advantage on saving throws against being charmed or frightened as long as it is within 60 feet of an ally.

Merope Consumption (1/Day). As a bonus action, the Thriae Soldier consumes a dose of merope. For 1 minute:

  • Gains a +2 bonus to attack rolls and saving throws.
  • Gains resistance to all damage.
  • Regains 5 hit points at the start of each of its turns.

Venomous Arsenal. The Thriae Soldier can coat its weapons with its venom as a free action. A creature hit by a venom-coated weapon must succeed on a DC 14 Constitution saving throw or take 10 (3d6) poison damage and be poisoned for 1 minute. The creature can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success.

Swarm Tactics. The Thriae Soldier has advantage on attack rolls against a creature if at least one of its allies is within 5 feet of the creature and the ally isn’t incapacitated.

Actions

Multiattack. The Thriae Soldier makes two attacks: one with its longbow or melee weapon and one with its sting.

Sting. Melee Weapon Attack: +8 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target.

  • Hit: 11 (2d6 + 5) piercing damage plus 10 (3d6) poison damage.

Composite Longbow. Ranged Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, range 150/600 ft., one target.

  • Hit: 10 (1d10 + 5) piercing damage plus 10 (3d6) poison damage.

Volley (Recharge 5-6). The Thriae Soldier looses a volley of arrows in a 20-foot-radius area within 120 feet. Each creature in that area must make a DC 14 Dexterity saving throw, taking 14 (4d6) piercing damage plus 10 (3d6) poison damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.

Reactions

Guard’s Reflex. When an ally within 5 feet of the Thriae Soldier is hit by an attack, the soldier can use its reaction to impose disadvantage on the attack roll by parrying it with its weapon.

Combat Tactics

The Thriae Soldier fights with precision and coordination, leveraging its allies for tactical advantages:

  • Early Battle: It begins combat by staying at range, using its Composite Longbow and Volley ability to weaken foes.
  • Mid-Battle: Once enemies close the distance, it applies venom to its sting and engages in melee combat, relying on Swarm Tactics to maximize damage.
  • When Pressured: The soldier uses its Merope Consumption to bolster its defenses and regain hit points, ensuring its survival in prolonged combat.
  • Defensive Positioning: It uses its Guard’s Reflex to protect high-value allies, such as hive queens or spellcasters, maintaining formation and coordination.

The Thriae Soldier is a disciplined combatant, always seeking to outmaneuver and overwhelm foes with precision strikes and venomous assaults.

Family Ties

The Thriae Soldier is part of a colony, also consisting of a Queen and Seers. More information about the Thriae colony can be found here.

The guardians of the thriae colony and its treasures, thriae soldiers make up the backbone of a hive’s defenses. Whether patrolling the perimeter of the hive or protecting its queen and seers from attackers, soldiers are a crucial asset ensuring a colony’s survival, and so it makes sense that they compose the majority of thriae populations. While not as spiritually powerful as their seer and queen kin, soldiers possess remarkable agility and skill with the bow.

Guards remain stationed in pairs outside doors to important areas, such as the meditation chambers of seers and the enormous private quarters of the queen, and when their duties take them outside the walls of the hive, they travel in large convoys. A thriae soldier’s stinger carries within it especially potent venom similar to that of giant bees, and the soldier can easily apply this poison to her weapons.

While most soldiers carry bows, they are also trained at an early age with a multitude of both melee and ranged weapons, and some prefer the feel of a sword or hammer. Regardless of the type, all thriae weapons and armors are expertly crafted, made of steel and gilded with intricate decorations of gold and amber-hued gems. Thriae soldiers are often talented artisans as well as warriors, and most create their own weapons to bear in combat.

Since there are exponentially more soldiers than seers in any given colony, thriae queens ration merope sparingly to soldiers, whose use of it doesn’t provoke the divine insight cherished by thriae culture, but rather inspires courage and brute strength on the battlefield. When a thriae soldier consumes merope, her reflexes quicken, her wits sharpen, and she gains a second wind, so most individuals save their rationed doses for times of dire need. When circumstances are especially grim, commanders of thriae militias will order all of their troops to consume their merope at once, giving the company the final burst of strength it needs to turn the tide of battle.

Thriae soldiers are heavier-set than most of their slender thriae sisters, and average individuals weigh about 200 pounds and measure 6 feet from head to toe.
