“Chupacabra: The Shadowed Predator of Moonlit Hunts”

Chupacabra: The Shadowed Predator of Moonlit Hunts
Create

Also known as the Goat-Sucker, this elusive predator drains the lifeblood of beasts beneath the cover of darkness, leaving only silence and fear in its wake.

Appearance

A gaunt, sinewy creature no taller than a halfling but far more menacing, the Chupacabra’s flesh is leathery and mottled in hues of ashen green and corpse-gray. A ridge of spines or quills runs from its skull to the base of its tail, flexing with a subtle rattle when agitated. Its eyes gleam an unnatural crimson, reflecting torchlight like coals, and its maw brims with needle-sharp fangs built for piercing hide and vein alike. Some report bat-like membranes stretched between elongated limbs, while others speak of a feral, hairless canine silhouette.

Behaviour

The Chupacabra is a solitary nocturnal ambusher, moving with eerie stillness and uncanny intelligence. It favors stalking the outskirts of rural settlements, circling pens and pastures under the waxing moon. Rarely vocal, it communicates through hisses, clicks, and guttural hums—sounds that unsettle livestock long before it strikes. When cornered, it fights with erratic, serpentine ferocity, blending animal instinct with chilling cunning.

Habitat

Native to warm, arid regions—scrublands, deserts, and subtropical forests—the Chupacabra thrives where shadow and superstition run deep. It lairs in abandoned wells, sinkholes, and hollowed ravines, creating dens littered with bones and desiccated remains. Wandering versions have been sighted from sunbaked borderlands to misted jungles, adapting to nearly any terrain so long as prey is plentiful and light scarce.

Modus Operandi

Preferring stealth over confrontation, it paralyzes its victims with a venomous bite before draining their blood through twin puncture wounds. It leaves corpses untouched otherwise, a signature that fuels dread and folklore alike. When facing armed foes, it uses darting leaps, slashing talons, and deceptive feints—often retreating into darkness only to circle back unseen. Its heightened senses make it a formidable night hunter and a near-impossible quarry.

Motivation

Driven by a primal thirst and an almost ritualistic hunger for life’s essence, the Chupacabra hunts not for sustenance alone but compulsion. Scholars of the arcane speculate that it is a remnant of failed vampiric experiments or a fey predator cursed by starvation. Whatever its origin, the creature’s every act seems guided by the same unrelenting instinct: to drink deeply and vanish before dawn’s first light.

Lore.
Whispered about in rural towns and remote borderlands, the Chupacabra is a shadowy predator of legend. Livestock are found drained of blood, its tracks vanish mysteriously, and sightings are fleeting. Scholars debate whether it is an undiscovered species, a mutation, or something far older and more unnatural. Those who encounter it in the wild rarely survive the night.

Traits

Cryptid Predator. Advantage on Stealth checks in rural, forested, or shadowed terrain. Its existence is widely doubted, adding to the terror it inspires.

Blood Sense. The Chupacabra can sense creatures within 60 feet that are injured or bleeding, even through cover.

Spiderlike Agility. Can climb walls, ceilings, and trees without an ability check. Can move through another creature’s space without provoking opportunity attacks.

Nocturnal Hunter. Disadvantage on attack rolls and Wisdom (Perception) checks in bright sunlight.

Actions

Multiattack. It makes two attacks: one with its Claws and one with Blood Drain (if grappling a target).

Claws. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target.
Hit: 10 (2d6 + 3) slashing damage. The claws rake through hide, leaving shallow gashes that bleed profusely.

Blood Drain. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one grappled creature.
Hit: 9 (2d8) piercing damage. The Chupacabra regains hit points equal to the damage dealt, feasting on the victim’s vitality.

Venomous Bite (Recharge 5–6). The Chupacabra bites a creature within 5 ft.
Hit: 14 (4d6) poison damage, and the target must succeed on a DC 14 Constitution saving throw or be paralyzed until the end of its next turn. Its fangs inject a burning venom that seeps into the bloodstream.

Reactions

Evasive Leap (Recharge 5–6). When targeted by an attack it can see, the Chupacabra leaps up to 20 feet to an unoccupied space, including walls or ceilings. The attack automatically misses if the Chupacabra leaves line of sight.

Combat Tactics

It hunts under cover of night, relying on stealth, ambush, and its Blood Sense to pick vulnerable prey. It isolates weaker targets, paralyzes them with its venom, and drains them to heal itself mid-combat. It strikes quickly, then retreats into shadows, using walls, trees, or uneven terrain to remain elusive. In groups, Chupacabras coordinate subtly, circling and harrying foes. It avoids sunlight and will flee if its health is critically low, returning later to finish the hunt.

The chupacabra actually originates in Puerto Rico in 1995 but shortly after its first “appearance” a comedian there coined a name for the creature and it was suddenly witnessed in more than a dozen other countries. Basically there’s two different versions of this monster: one that’s sort of an aquatic vampire and another that’s more like a dog. The latter is the one I have solid artwork for so that’s what’s below. Studies into the victims of this creature don’t show any signs of exsanguination but bleeding prey dry has remained a part of the chupacabra’s myth.

Fast Run. When the chupacabra takes the Dash action, it moves triple its speed instead of double.

Jointed Limbs. It has advantage on checks made to grapple.

Keen Senses. It has advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on sight, smell, and sound.

Pounce. If the chupacabra moves at least 20 feet straight toward a creature and then hits it with a claw attack on the same turn, that target must succeed on a DC 19 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone. If the target is prone, the chupacabra can make one bite attack against it as a bonus action.

Running Leap. With a 10-foot running start, the chupacabra can long jump up to 40 feet.

Stench. Any creature that starts its turn within 10 feet of the chupacabra must succeed on a DC 19 Constitution saving throw or be poisoned until the start of its next turn. On a successful saving throw, the creature is immune to the chupacabra’s stench for 24 hours.

ACTIONS

Multiattack. The chupacabra attacks three times: once with its bite and twice with its claws.

Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +11 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 19 (3d8+6) piercing damage. The chupacabra regains hit points equal to the piercing damage taken.

Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: +11 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 16 (3d6+6) slashing damage.

This lizard-like creature stalks forward upon two spindly legs, stepping with soundless, predatory care. Finely scaled skin stretches tight over its lithe body, giving the reptilian thing a lean, starved appearance, its thin arms reaching before it, long, clawed fingers gripping in anticipation. Between jaws filled with tiny, vicious teeth darts a thick, serpentine tongue, and dozens of thin black quills run from the back of its head to the base of its lashing tail.

Opportunistic, desert-dwelling stalkers and scavengers, chupacabras stalk arid reaches and the fringes of civilization, endlessly hunting to sate their thirst for blood. Spry and stealthy, they prefer to keep to areas of high grass and protective rock, their slightly reflective scales allowing them to blend in well with such surroundings. Upon spotting vulnerable or unsuspecting prey, they burst from cover and leap upon their victims, slashing viciously with their long claws and biting with powerful jaws, seeking to drink of the warm gore tenuously restrained within. With a preference for lone travelers and farm animals, chupacabras leave little evidence of their presence, only the blood-drained husks of their meals revealing the extent of their hunting grounds.

A typical chupacabra measures nearly 5 and a half feet from muzzle to tail tip and stands just under 4 feet tall, though some have been reported to grow to the height of an adult human. Slightly built and light of bone, most weigh close to a hundred pounds.

Chupar (Ex)

A chupacabra can suck blood from a living victim by making a successful grapple check. If it pins the foe, it drains blood, dealing 1 point of Constitution damage each round the pin is maintained. Upon successfully draining blood, a chupacabra is invigorated, gaining a significant boost in speed for 10 rounds similar to the spell haste. An invigorated chupacabra can still drain blood – and in so doing increase the length of its invigoration – but gains no additional effects. An invigorated chupacabra’s statistics change as follows: AC 17, touch 15; Ref +8; Spd 60 ft.; Melee 2 bites +7 (1d4+1) and 2 claws +2 (1d3); Jump +21.

Improved Grab (Ex)

To use this ability, a chupacabra must hit with both of its claw attacks. It can then attempt to start a grapple as a free action without provoking an attack of opportunity. If it wins the grapple check, it establishes a hold and can use its chupar attack. A chupacabra can use either its Strength modifier or Dexterity modifier for grapple checks, whichever is better.

Pounce (Ex)

If a chupacabra charges a foe, it can make a full attack.

Variant Chupacabras

Chupacabra
Chupacabra

Some frontiersmen tell of chupacabras gliding through the sky and attacking upon powerful reptilian wings. Usually sighted near mountainous regions and areas where unexplainable lights from the sky regularly visit, these airborne chupacabras prove much bolder than their land-bound cousins and have been known to carry off sheep, kidnap children and small humanoids, and attack even full-grown and well-armed adults. A winged chupacabra has a Fly speed of 60 feet with average mobility, which increases to 90 feet after the creature has fed. A winged chupacabra’s CR is the same as a normal chupacabra.
