Stone Colossus

Stone Colossus
Create (midjourney.com)

The Stone Colossus is a towering, awe-inspiring construct, standing at over 100 feet tall. Its entire form is hewn from a single block of ancient stone, often granite or basalt, giving it a weathered yet indomitable look. Chiseled, geometric patterns run across its surface, resembling the intricate carvings of forgotten civilizations. Its limbs, shaped like massive pillars, are proportioned like those of a giant warrior, ending in hands capable of crushing fortresses with a single blow. Its eyes, two gleaming gems set deep in its roughly hewn face, emit a dull, otherworldly light that never blinks or wavers. Cracks run along its body, glowing faintly as if molten rock lies just beneath the surface, hinting at the arcane forces that animate it.

Behavior:

Stone Colossi are silent, brooding sentinels, standing motionless for centuries until activated. When dormant, they resemble massive, unmoving statues, mistaken for relics of a bygone era. However, once awakened by their creator or an intruder’s presence, they become relentless and single-minded in purpose. Stone Colossi exhibit no signs of fatigue or hesitation, pursuing their objective with a slow, methodical precision. They do not communicate and display no emotion, save for an occasional shudder as the earth trembles beneath their massive weight. They are known to crush any perceived threat with crushing, methodical blows, pulverizing even the strongest defenses.

Habitat:

Stone Colossi are often found in remote, desolate landscapes where time and civilization have little meaning. Ruined temples, mountain passes, and the darkened heart of forgotten fortresses are their preferred domains. Some are stationed deep within underground labyrinths or amidst colossal stone circles, guarding hidden secrets or ancient relics. Their presence in these places is not random; they are bound by powerful magic to locations of great significance to their creators. Such areas are often barren, their soil littered with broken weapons and bones of those who dared approach.

Modus Operandi:

When activated, a Stone Colossus operates with a single-minded purpose: to guard, destroy, or enforce its master’s will. It moves slowly but inexorably, crushing obstacles underfoot or swatting enemies with devastating slams. The Colossus’s strategy relies on its sheer size and invulnerability, wading through volleys of arrows or magical attacks without flinching. Its presence alone is often enough to demoralize even the bravest of opponents. If a foe is too nimble or elusive, the Colossus will employ its ability to shatter weapons and shields, leaving its opponents defenseless. Its thick, stone skin makes it impervious to most magic, and it relies on brute force to resolve any conflict.

Motivation:

A Stone Colossus is devoid of personal desires, emotions, or ambitions. It exists purely to fulfill the purpose for which it was created, whether that be as an eternal guardian, an indomitable siege engine, or a divine enforcer of cosmic law. Its motivations are entirely bound to the will of its creator — a duty it will pursue to the point of its own destruction. However, in rare cases, if a Colossus is abandoned or its master is long dead, it may become a vengeful automaton, enforcing the last command given to it even if it no longer has meaning. Its motivation, then, becomes a tragic mockery of free will — a timeless relic with no purpose other than to wander aimlessly or destroy all that trespass in its domain.

Lore:

The Stone Colossus is an ancient, living relic of stone magic, created through epic rituals and bound with powerful enchantments. These behemoths were originally built as the ultimate defenders of long-lost kingdoms and temples, standing vigilant over sacred sites or acting as weapons of war in catastrophic battles between titanic forces. Created by master artisans or ancient deities like Hephaestus, their forms are engraved with mystical runes and symbols that pulse with latent power. A Stone Colossus’s magic is so strong that its mere presence alters the surrounding environment. They often remain in slumber for centuries, only awakening when specific conditions are met, or when the ruins they guard are desecrated.

Traits:

  • Colossal Frame. The Stone Colossus is impossibly massive, occupying a space of 30 feet by 30 feet. It can enter a space large enough for a creature of Gargantuan size and squeezes through spaces 20 feet wide or larger without squeezing penalties.
  • Immutable Form. The Colossus is immune to any spell or effect that would alter its form.
  • Magic Resistance. The Stone Colossus has advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects.
  • Magic Immunity. The Colossus is immune to all spells of 6th level or lower unless it wishes to be affected. A transmute rock to mud spell slows it (as the slow spell) for 1 round, with no saving throw, while transmute mud to rock heals all its lost hit points. A stone to flesh spell has no effect on a Stone Colossus.
  • Siege Monster. The Stone Colossus deals double damage to objects and structures.

Actions:

  • Multiattack. The Stone Colossus makes three Slam attacks and can use Shatter if available.
  • Slam. Melee Weapon Attack: +24 to hit, reach 30 ft., one target. Hit: 90 (12d10 + 15) bludgeoning damage. If the target is a creature, it must succeed on a DC 28 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone.
  • Shatter (Recharge 5-6). The Colossus releases a concussive shockwave in a 60-foot cone. Each creature in that area must make a DC 28 Constitution saving throw, taking 91 (26d6) thunder damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one. Objects and structures take maximum damage and non-magical items in the area are shattered.

Legendary Actions:

The Stone Colossus can take 3 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one legendary action can be used at a time and only at the end of another creature’s turn. It regains spent legendary actions at the start of its turn.

  • Colossal Step. The Colossus moves up to its speed without provoking opportunity attacks. If it ends its movement adjacent to a creature, that creature must succeed on a DC 24 Dexterity saving throw or take 45 (6d12 + 12) bludgeoning damage and be knocked prone.
  • Earthquake Stomp. The Colossus slams a foot into the ground. Each creature within 30 feet of the Colossus must succeed on a DC 28 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone and take 52 (8d12) bludgeoning damage.
  • Unyielding. The Colossus ends one condition or effect on itself that it can ignore due to its condition immunities.

Mythic Actions (If Mythic Trait is Active):

When reduced to 0 hit points for the first time, the Colossus shatters and reforms over the next round, gaining 425 hit points. It activates its Mythic Traits for the rest of the encounter.

  • Ancient Wrath (Costs 2 Actions). The Colossus unleashes a roar of tectonic fury. All creatures within 120 feet that can hear it must succeed on a DC 26 Wisdom saving throw or become Frightened for 1 minute. A creature can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on a success.
  • Stone Tomb. The Colossus causes the ground within 60 feet to erupt. Any creature in that area must succeed on a DC 28 Dexterity saving throw or be restrained by encasing stone. A restrained creature can use an action to make a DC 28 Strength check, freeing itself on a success.

Reactions:

  • Stone Aegis. When the Colossus or a creature within 30 feet of it is targeted by a ranged attack, it can raise a magical stone barrier as a reaction, imposing disadvantage on the attack. This barrier lasts until the start of the Colossus’s next turn.

Regional Effects:

The region containing a Stone Colossus is warped by its presence, which creates one or more of the following effects:

  • Earthshaker. Minor tremors can be felt within 1 mile of the Stone Colossus. Each hour spent in this area has a 10% chance to cause a localized earthquake, knocking down structures and splitting the ground.
  • Stone Sentinels. 1d4 earth elementals guard the vicinity within 1 mile of the Stone Colossus, appearing from the earth whenever intruders are detected. These creatures cannot be permanently destroyed while the Colossus remains intact.
  • Magic Drain. Within 1 mile of the Colossus, spells of 3rd level or lower automatically fail unless the caster succeeds on a DC 20 spellcasting ability check. Spells of 4th level or higher are cast at disadvantage.

If the Stone Colossus is destroyed, these effects fade over the course of 1d10 days.

Magic Items:

  • Core of the Stone Titan (Legendary, Requires Attunement). This crystalline heart pulses with dormant magic. When attuned, it grants the bearer resistance to all nonmagical damage, and the ability to cast earthquake once per day (DC 20). Additionally, while attuned, the bearer can summon a spectral image of the Stone Colossus, which serves as a guardian (functions as a guardian of faith spell) until it vanishes after dealing 60 damage or being dispelled.

The Stone Colossus is a terrifying opponent suitable for high-level parties. It serves as a legendary guardian, its titanic form nearly indestructible and imbued with elemental power. It can be placed as the final defender of an ancient temple or as a slumbering titan in forgotten ruins, waiting to be awoken by those foolish enough to trespass.

Stone Colossus
Create (midjourney.com)

Standing as an unyielding monolith against time, the Stone Colossus is an awe-inspiring behemoth sculpted from a single block of ancient stone. Towering hundreds of feet high, its body resembles that of a massive armored warrior, carved with incredible precision and adorned with mystical, weather-worn runes. Each enormous limb is chiseled with intricate patterns, some depicting long-forgotten legends, others radiating an eerie glow from veins of molten rock that pulse like a slumbering heartbeat. Its faceless helm, set with twin gemstone eyes that smolder with the faintest hint of crimson light, surveys its surroundings with silent vigilance. Cracks and jagged scars run across its colossal frame, filled with glowing magma that casts ominous flickers of light through the darkened ruins it guards. Thick moss, ivy, and roots have grown into its crevices, weaving through the deep fissures like veins, suggesting centuries of dormancy and blending it seamlessly into the environment.

When it moves, the earth quakes beneath its titanic footfalls, sending shockwaves that reverberate for miles around. Each deliberate step seems to bend the world itself, leaving shattered stone and crushed terrain in its wake. Its purpose is singular and absolute: to safeguard what remains of the ancient civilization it once served, protecting it from the ravages of time and intruders alike. For those unfortunate enough to awaken it, the Stone Colossus is an indomitable juggernaut, a force of nature that fights not out of rage or malice, but out of an unwavering duty bound by magic older than memory. Like a mountain that walks, it moves with the weight of eons behind it—unyielding, eternal, and unstoppable.Constructing one involves the employment of epic magic and mental forces. These are mainly made by either Hephaestos or his servants.

A stone colossus cannot speak or make any vocal noise.

Construction

A stone colossus’s body is chiseled from a single block of hard stone, such as granite, weighing at least 375,000 pounds. The colossus costs 760,000 gp to create, which includes 100,000 gp for the body. Assembling the body requires a successful Craft (sculpting) or Craft (masonry) check (DC 37). The creator must be 25th level and able to cast epic spells. Completing the ritual drains 30,600 XP from the creator and requires geas/quest, limited wish, polymorph any object, and shatter.
