Dinosaur, Daspletosaurus, Death-Fanged King
“Bigger than a raptor, meaner than a rex—this bone-crushing apex predator hunts not just prey, but rivals.”

Daspletosaurus is a hulking predator, its body built like a walking siege engine. Standing over 10 feet tall at the hip and reaching lengths of nearly 30 feet, it moves with a slow, deliberate confidence. Its hide is a patchwork of scarred, pebbled scales and armored osteoderms, often streaked with mud or dried blood. A blocky skull with a deep snout and forward-facing eyes grants it intense binocular vision, while its gaping maw reveals thick, banana-shaped teeth ideal for crushing bone. Ragged feathers sometimes fringe the nape and tail—vestigial remnants of its evolutionary cousins.
Behavior
Daspletosaurus is a territorial and highly aggressive apex predator. Unlike the more solitary Tyrannosaurus, it has been observed tolerating members of its own kind during feeding or nesting seasons—though such “alliances” are often tense and short-lived. It communicates through deep vocalizations and subsonic rumbles that can be felt more than heard. Dominance fights are common, and many adults bear the scars of past battles.
Habitat
Daspletosaurus thrives in warm, humid lowlands—dense floodplains, fern-filled river valleys, and subtropical deltas. It avoids high elevations and open deserts but claims wide-ranging territories across its wetland domains. In some campaign settings, it may be encountered in cursed or forgotten valleys where time seems arrested in a Cretaceous state.
Modus Operandi
A patient stalker, Daspletosaurus relies on its excellent vision and sense of smell to trail prey for miles. It prefers to ambush from cover—despite its size—bursting forth with terrifying force when the moment is right. Its attack strategy is brutal and straightforward: rush, bite, and crush. It targets slower herd members first, often aiming for the spine or flanks with a powerful bite meant to disable in one strike. Unlike more precise hunters, it relies on overwhelming trauma and blood loss.
When threatened or injured, Daspletosaurus does not flee. It escalates.
Motivation
Daspletosaurus operates on primal instincts: hunger, dominance, and survival. It has no malice, but its cold, calculating aggression is easy to mistake for cruelty. Some druids and rangers believe these beasts are ancient guardians of the land’s balance, existing to cull the weak and preserve the primal order. In magical regions, rare individuals may be enchanted or warped—bound to the will of a draconic overlord or slumbering jungle god.

Traits
Keen Smell.
The daspletosaurus has advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on smell.
Crushing Bite.
A creature hit by the daspletosaurus’s Bite must succeed on a DC 17 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone. If already prone, the target is grappled (escape DC 17) and restrained.
Territorial Fury (Recharge 5–6)
When damaged by a creature within 60 feet, the daspletosaurus may enter a frenzy until the end of its next turn. During this state, it has advantage on melee attacks, doesn’t provoke opportunity attacks, and can make a Bite attack as a bonus action.
Bone-Shaker Maw.
If the daspletosaurus hits a restrained creature with its Bite, the target takes an additional 13 (3d8) bludgeoning damage and must make a DC 17 Constitution saving throw or be stunned until the end of its next turn.
Actions
Multiattack. The daspletosaurus makes two attacks: one with its Bite and one with its Tail Slam.
Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +11 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target.
Hit: 33 (4d12 + 7) piercing damage. If the target is Medium or smaller, it must succeed on a DC 17 Strength saving throw or be grappled and restrained.
Tail Slam. Melee Weapon Attack: +11 to hit, reach 15 ft., one target.
Hit: 21 (3d10 + 5) bludgeoning damage. If the target is Large or smaller, it must succeed on a DC 17 Dexterity saving throw or be knocked prone.
Roar of the Wounded King (1/Day). The daspletosaurus roars. Each creature of its choice within 60 feet that can hear it must succeed on a DC 16 Wisdom saving throw or be frightened for 1 minute. A frightened creature repeats the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on a success. Creatures already frightened by this effect have disadvantage on attack rolls against the daspletosaurus.
These are tyrannosaurids smaller than the well-known Tyrannosaurus.
