Pop Corn

Dried corn used as the material component for the Pop Corn spell

Pop Corn causes a dried ear of corn to erupt into a chaotic mass of kernels that clogs movement and disrupts combat. It is a deliberately odd legacy Witch, Druid and Ranger spell.

Pop Corn — D&D 3.5e (legacy Witch rules)

School Conjuration (Creation)
Level Witch 1, Druid 1, Ranger 1
Components V, S, M
Casting Time 1 action
Area 20 feet
Duration 5 rounds
Saving Throw None
Spell Resistance No

Creatures in the affected area take a –4 initiative penalty, have movement reduced to one-quarter normal, and take –2 on attack rolls. Casters using spells with somatic components suffer a 20% spell-failure chance while affected.

Material component: a dried ear of corn.

Using Pop Corn in Play

The spell works as comic but effective terrain control: narrow corridors, doorways and crowded rooms become much harder to cross or fight through.

Edition Boundary

The percentage spell-failure and fractional movement rules are legacy mechanics. Do not carry them into 5e or Pathfinder without deliberate conversion.

Counterplay and Related Magic

The legacy effect is battlefield terrain control rather than a damage spell. Leaving the affected area or avoiding it entirely remains the simplest counter. Compare Entangle and other area-control magic. Dispel Magic can end the magical obstruction while it persists under the older rules.
