Hell · Sixth of the Nine Perditions
Malbolge — The Crushing Lands
Domain of Lilith · Lady of the Sixth
Malbolge is an infernal country of steep black mountains, unstable slopes, ash-filled air, caverns and falling stone. Rockslides and avalanches continually reshape the Sixth, while fortresses cling to the rare places where the terrain can be made secure.
The Sixth Perdition
Malbolge is defined by instability. Much of the Perdition consists of enormous black slopes where broad level ground is rare and every settlement must contend with the weight of the mountains above it.
Ash and smoke drift across ridges cut by fissures and fire pits. Loose rock accumulates until tremors, erosion or simple gravity release great slides of stone down the mountainsides.
The danger is continuous rather than exceptional. Roads disappear beneath rubble, structures are crushed and whole approaches to strongholds can become unusable after a single major collapse.
Deep caves and cavern systems open throughout the mountains. Some provide shelter from the falling stone; others descend into regions far removed from the recognised routes and fortresses of the Sixth.
Lilith and the Government of Malbolge
Lilith
Lady of the Sixth
Lilith is the recognised current ruler of Malbolge and one of the Lords of the Nine.
Her authority reaches across the recognised infernal holdings of the Sixth through her own court, its Dukes and the wider institutions of Hell.
The broken geography of Malbolge makes local strongholds important, but it does not divide the Perdition into independent kingdoms. Lilith governs the Sixth beneath the sovereignty of Asmodeus, Lord of Nessus and Overlord of Hell.
Current sovereignty
Lilith alone holds the Sixth.
Infernal nobility
Named Dukes and court officers serve beneath her
territorial authority.
Wider state
Malbolge remains subject to Hell-wide law,
institutions and the sovereignty of Nessus.
The Crushing Lands
The Endless Slopes
Black stone rises and falls at severe angles across much of Malbolge. Traversable shelves and ridges become natural sites for roads, camps and fortifications.
Falling Stone
Rockfalls range from isolated boulders to enormous avalanches capable of burying roads and demolishing whole structures.
The Caverns
Great cave systems penetrate the mountains and provide both refuge and danger. Some are occupied; many remain outside the better-known infernal routes.
Fortresses of Malbolge
Permanent strongholds survive only where builders can defend their structures against the instability of the slopes.
Copper-Plated Strongholds
Copper-plated fortresses are an established feature of Malbolge, their heavy defences intended in part to withstand falling stone and the violence of the surrounding terrain.
They represent a characteristic Malbolgian solution to the environment rather than a universal design for every fortress in the Sixth.
Stable Ground
Any reliable shelf, ridge or cavern entrance has strategic value. Infernal authorities fortify such locations because genuinely secure ground is scarce.
Named Powers of Malbolge
Amdusius
Amdusius is one of the principal Dukes of Malbolge and serves as Lilith’s major domo.
His office places him close to the practical business of Lilith’s court and the administration of her infernal holdings.
Aguares
Aguares is another established Duke whose territorial holdings lie within Malbolge.
He belongs to the older infernal nobility of the Sixth and remains part of the courtly landscape beneath Lilith’s restored rule.
Moloch
Moloch once displaced Lilith and exercised authority over Malbolge.
His rule belongs to the political history of the Sixth, but he holds no current sovereignty here. After his fall he was cast out of Hell, leaving Malbolge once again under Lilith.
The Court of the Sixth
Amdusius and Aguares stand among the prominent Dukes of Lilith’s present court, each exercising his own authority beneath the Lady of the Sixth.
Around them stands a wider infernal nobility of officers, retainers and lesser powers whose authority depends upon Lilith and the recognised hierarchy of Hell.
Travel Through Malbolge
The terrain determines movement through the Sixth.
Direct travel across the slopes is frequently impossible. Recognised passages favour ridges, defensible shelves, cavern routes and other places where the landscape can be crossed without constant exposure to falling stone.
Rockslides can destroy or block even established paths. Travellers may therefore encounter diversions, closed routes or infernal guards redirecting traffic around newly unstable ground.
As elsewhere in Hell, important routes and crossings fall within infernal jurisdiction. Authorities may require recognised seals, permission, payment, sponsorship or other proof of lawful passage.
Denizens of Malbolge
Devils inhabit the fortresses and recognised routes of the Sixth, serving Lilith, her Dukes and the wider institutions of Hell.
Cornugons
Horned devils are among the established infernal inhabitants of Malbolge and serve as formidable guards and soldiers.
Lesser Devils
Lemures, spinagons and other lesser ranks also appear within the Sixth according to the needs of infernal households, garrisons and officials.
Souls in Malbolge
Malbolge does not automatically receive a particular moral category of the dead.
Souls reach Hell through recognised claims, contracts, allegiances, supernatural circumstances or an appropriate cosmological destination.
Those legitimately held within Malbolge may be imprisoned, assigned to labour, transferred between infernal authorities, traded or subjected to other forms of infernal punishment and transformation.
Labour in the Crushing Lands can be especially brutal because roads, fortifications and damaged structures must continually be cleared or rebuilt after rockfalls.
None of these practices constitutes a universal rule that every soul entering the Sixth undergoes the same fate.
Malbolge Through Infernal History
Hell itself formed during Eon VII. Organised devil civilisation and formal infernal government arose much later during Eon XVI.
Lilith belongs to the early political history of the Sixth and held Malbolge before later infernal conflict displaced her.
At a later stage Moloch displaced Lilith and exercised authority over Malbolge.
That regime eventually failed, and Lilith recovered the lordship of the Sixth.
The present infernal settlement therefore recognises Lilith as Lady of Malbolge beneath the sovereignty of Asmodeus.
A Mortal Vision of Hell
Mortal religious art has often represented Hell through images of imprisonment, monstrous beings and punishment. Such works can contribute atmosphere without serving as literal depictions of the Sixth.
