His ultimate goal is to complete his penance and finally be freed from the curse that has kept him alive for centuries. He believes that by helping others, he can earn the redemption he so desperately seeks. Despite his otherworldly abilities and the powerful magic at his disposal, Naciens is not invincible. If he is forced to defend himself, he will use his spells to protect himself, but he will never deal the killing blow.

Naciens is a tall and slender humanoid with pale, almost translucent skin. He has piercing blue eyes that seem to glow with an otherworldly light, and long white hair that falls in loose waves around his shoulders. He dresses in simple robes of white and silver, adorned with intricate sigils and symbols of his faith. He moves with a graceful fluidity, and his presence exudes an aura of calm and wisdom.

Special Traits:

  • Eternal Penance. Naciens has been cursed for an offense he will not reveal, and cannot die until he has completely atoned for his misdeed. He is immune to aging, disease, and poison, and can only be killed by the fulfillment of his penance.
  • Legendary Resistance (3/day). If Naciens fails a saving throw, he can choose to succeed instead.
  • Spellcasting. Naciens is a 23rd-level spellcaster. His spellcasting ability is Intelligence (spell save DC 19, +11 to hit with spell attacks). He has the following spells prepared:
    • Cantrips (at will): mage hand, prestidigitation, ray of frost, resistance
    • 1st level (4 slots): comprehend languages, detect magic, mage armor, magic missile, shield
    • 2nd level (3 slots): detect thoughts, invisibility, knock, mirror image
    • 3rd level (3 slots): dispel magic, fireball, lightning bolt, counterspell
    • 4th level (3 slots): banishment, dimension door, greater invisibility, wall of fire

  • Counter Spell. Naciens can use his reaction to attempt to counter a spell cast within 60 feet of him. He makes an ability check using his spellcasting ability. If the check succeeds and the spell is of 8th level or lower, it fails and has no effect.

Legendary Actions:

Naciens can take 3 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one legendary action option can be used at a time and only at the end of another creature’s turn. Naciens regains spent legendary actions at the start of his turn.

  • Spell. He casts a spell from his list of prepared spells.
  • Teleport. He magically teleports up to 60 feet to an unoccupied space he can see.
  • Ward. He casts the warding spell, granting himself resistance to all damage until the end of his next turn.


Naciens carries only the essentials: a simple robe and a quarterstaff. His quarterstaff is made of a rare wood, which is both sturdy and lightweight, allowing him to use it with ease.

Magic Items:

Ring of Spell Turning. Naciens wears a ring that grants him the ability to cast a spell back at its caster if he successfully makes a saving throw against it.

Lair Actions:

Naciens does not have a lair as he is constantly on the move, seeking out opportunities to atone for his misdeed.
