Echinochimaera dwells in the shallow river bottoms, catching small prey and overall living a calm, placid life. Males have eight “antlers” not seen on females, a form of sexual dimorphism. When it is attacked, its spiny back is helpful only against small predators. When big creatures such as orthacanthus go on the assault, the echinochimaera releases its secret weapon: a foul-smelling liquid secreted from the fin spines.
