Two hundred years ago King Adolf of Nassau granted Leutkirch the right to rule itself raised it to the status of a Free Imperial Town. The town governing structure is an elected bürgermeister (mayor) who chairs the town council whose members include the magistrate (Amtmann), nine councillors representing the landowners and nine that represent the guilds with three secret councillors to bring balance.

Leutkirch has also become a member of the Swabian League and gained a seat and vote both in the League and in the Imperial Diet.

The main industry of the town is the linen trade and the main weaver guild has a membership of over 200, with linen exported to across the Empire.

Like the majority of the other Free Imperial Cities, Leutkirch is going through considerable internal strife with the Protestant Reformation. The town has became officially Lutheran. However there was a fierce dispute for several years between the Protestant magistrates of the town and the abbot of Weingarten Abbey for control over the parish church whose patron was the abbot. A compromise was reached the Catholics kept the parish church while the Protestants took over the hospital’s church. Catholics therefore maintained a foothold and some rights in the Protestant city.
